Product Description

The Brown & Sharpe Value-Line outside micrometer has a vernier scale in inch units for taking precise outside diameter (OD) measurements, a convertible friction drive thimble mechanism for uniform or variable pressure during adjustment, and tungsten carbide faces for wear resistance.

The micrometer’s frame has a baked enamel finish for protection and durability. The vernier scale on the thimble and sleeve is graduated to 0.0001”, and has a satin chrome rust- and glare-resistant finish. The ratchet mechanism can be disabled for variable adjustment control. The spindle and anvil have flat measuring faces and are carbide-tipped for wear resistance. A spindle lock helps provide secure locking of the measurement position.< /p>

Micrometers are precision measuring instruments that use a calibrated screw to measure small distances. These measurements are translated into large rotations of the screw that are then able to be read from a scale or a dial. Micrometers are typically used in manufacturing, machining, and mechanical engineering. There are three types of micrometer: outside, inside, and depth. Outside micrometers may also be called micrometer calipers, and are used to measure the length, width, or outside diameter of an object. Inside micrometers are typically used to measure interior diameter, as in a hole. Depth micrometers measure the height, or depth, of any shape that has a step, groove, or slot.

Brown & Sharpe manufactures precision measuring equipment and metrology hand tools. The company, founded in 1833, played a key role in setting industrial standards in the United States. Brown & Sharpe was acquired by Hexagon Metrology in 2001, and is headquartered in North Kingstown, RI.

I have bought several Brown & Sharpe Valueline micrometers over the years and must admit that Mitutoyo brand micrometers are MUCH smoother in operation, have MUCH higher quality control from the factory, have much higher attention to detail, and have better accuracy than Brown & Sharpe. It pains me to say this as I use Brown & Sharpe micrometers exclusively as a machinist. If I can do it all over again, I would choose Mitutoyo micrometers to rely on. I originally chose B&S micrometers being that they were made in the USA, but since owning them, they are gritty, rough in operation, dinged up from the factory, and have poor quality control compared to Mitutoyo micrometers. When I began as a machinist, I bought a very rough set of USED Mitutoyo mics (6 sets) from friends in the trade and the Mitutoyo used and abused micrometers are MORE reliable and smoother than my brand new Brown & Sharpe Valueline micrometers!! My old used and abused Mitutoyo micrometers always pass inspection to less then .0001 reliabiltiy, while my Brown & Sharpe BRAND NEW micrometers are off by .0002-.0003 every time they are inspected!!! Sad, VERY sad!! COME ON Brown & Sharpe, that is EMBARRASSING for your micrometers!!!!!! GET WITH IT ALREADY!!!!

5/9/15 UPDATE: The quality control of these Brown & Sharpe micrometers is HORRENDOUS, even WORST than ever! Since I already made the mistake of buying a full set of Brown & Sharpe micrometers years ago, I am stuck buying this brand each time another one of my existing micrometers wears out and becomes junk prematurely. Every Brown & Sharpe micrometer I have purchased in the last year has issues with either the thimble, friction ratchet, spindle adjustment, and now broken pieces rattling in the body my 9-10 pair of micrometers!

I bought several of these in different sizes. I have Mitutoyos and Starretts as well. I've had really good luck with the Brown & Sharpe dial calipers so I figured I'd give these a try. They're alright... a little sticky, not real well finished but they do work. Good price, made in USA, but they are rough. In my opinion, money was best spent on the Mitutoyos.
