With just a touch of romance! I loved how well-rounded the characters were and how much everyone didn't like the victim! It's hard to figure out whodunit when anyone could/would have! I can't wait to read the next one!

Brownies and Betrayal by Heather Justesen is a combination of delicious romantic options, baked goods, and a suspenseful mystery. We're introduced to Tess Crawford, a pastry chef who's moved from Chicago to small town Silver Springs after she's caught her fiance cheating on her. She's opening her own bakery and doing refreshments for a wedding when one of the wedding guests gets into a petty argument with her over her brownies. Tess later finds that guest murdered and she becomes a suspect when the police find out about the argument and her fingerprints are found on the murder weapon. In trying to clear her name, Tess finds herself in several dangerous situations as she zeroes in on the killer.

The thing I like about Heather Justesen's books is that she writes romance really well. Family by Design had some really great romantic moments that made me sigh, and I was hoping for that with Brownies and Betrayal. Heather does a good job of balancing the mystery with a "love triangle" of sorts, but there's not a lot of romantic resolution, instead there's more of a romantic set-up for the next book (this is the start of a new series from what I gather). The mystery was good, although I called the killer early on, but I liked the twists and turns the story took. The recipes sounded yummy and I'd definitely like to try a few of them. This is a great curl-up-on-your-couch afternoon read.

If you love culinary cozies, you're in for a delicious treat. In Brownies and Betrayal, Tempest "Tess" Crawford was a former pastry chef from Chicago and starting her own business in her hometown of Silver Springs, Arizona. When she catered her brownies at a wedding party, she came across an arch rival and then found her dead body. While she tried to set up her own bakery shop, she became under suspicion for murder. It's up to Tess and her best friend, Honey, to find new clues on who wanted Valerie dead, and went behind the scenes. Trouble came her way with her scheming ex-fiancé to win her back, a couple of attacks on her life, and a possible new love interest for Tess, before she opened her own shop and discovered whodunnit and why. This included yummy recipes to try at home.

I really enjoy cozy mysteries, the cooking genre is a touch different than my norm. There were things I really liked and things I was not so keen on.

I generally liked the lead character Tess, she is spunky and upbeat and way to curious for her own good! Perfect for a cozy mystery. She is mostly joined by her BFF Honey, another sassy gal! I loved this pairing because it really helped give a sounding board for the progress of the case.

The overall mystery was intriguing, some parts were super obvious but it did surprise me in the end. I really thought I knew who the murderer was, turns out I was way off base! I really enjoyed the end, unfortunately it took a stretch to get past the beginning. The whole premise of why Tess thought she would be a suspect was beyond unreal. She met the chick for like five minutes and exchanged a handful of sentences. Whatever, it was silly but not so far as to turn me off the book.

Terrific supporting cast. I count at least three romantic prospects in the mix. Definitely things to watch in the future of the series. Loved her friends Honey and Lenny, always great to have a hacker on hand! Sean is a delicious player and Jack has hunky Alpha written all over him! I also enjoyed the interactions with the detective.

I listened to the audiobooks narrated by Pamela Almand, who is terrific. She has a great pace in the read that really keeps the story moving. There is the perfect touch of sass in her voice to really compliments the lead character and feel of the story. The other voices were consistent throughout the read. The men could have been a touch deeper, but were distinct and easy to discern who was speaking. I adore the energy she adds to the read!

I've been wanting to start this series for a while. It was such a fun read and a great little mystery. Tess just moved back to her small home town to open a bakery when she discovers a dead body. When she becomes a suspect in the murder she figures she better try to shove the case so she doesn't end up in jail. I like the addition of the recipes in the book. I can't wait to try out the eclair one and see how good they are. Can't wait to read the next one in this set!

Aside from the need for editing, typos and continuity errors and an easily figured out plot, I wish Ms Justeen had read up on Shaker furniture. A "black lacquered coffee table" would never have come out of their workshop.

I will make the recipes, though.

Tess, a renowned pastry chef in a fancy Chicago hotel, discovers her boss and soon to be ex-fiance lip locked with another employee. She takes a more or less permanent sabbatical to her small hometown in Silver Springs, Arizona, where she decides to open her own bakery. Her first assignment is a wedding taking place in the town's hotel. Aware of the increased level of tension among the wedding party, she is none the less staggered to discover a body hidden under the table designated for the wedding cake. She becomes a person of interest because the victim was overheard insulting Tess' training and skills and it doesn't help when our chef's prints are the only ones found on the murder weapon. Understanding that the local police force has little or no experience with murder investigations, and fearful that she may be falsely accused, she and her lifelong best friend, Honey, decide to help find the guilty party. Naturally, Tess is feisty as well as curious and engages in risky behaviors that soon surround her with friends and the not so friendly, trying to discourage her efforts. This was an enjoyable sweet and cozy mystery for YA and older readers. There is no explicit sex or foul speech, but a number of less than wise choices. Plenty of red herrings distract the reader and the perpetrator is not obvious until Tess just before Tess figures it out. The characters were well formed with good variety and there is plenty of try humour along with a possible new love interest (or two) in the plot. I definitely plan to read more of the series.
