Product Description

The Bruised Romantic Glee Club is the 5th solo album by composer Jakko M. Jakszyk.Comprising one CD of self-composed music featuring melodic tunes, glorious choruses, high production values with first class musicianship, with a second disc of eclectic cover versions of songs from the 60s and 70s including material by Henry Cow, King Crimson and Soft Machine, the album combines the best in modern Prog, with a set of personalised versions of some of the genre's classicmaterial. The guest musicians on this album are numerous including Robert Fripp & Gavin Harrison (Porcupine Tree).

Review

"This ambitious double disc is both a homage to his prog idols...and an intensely personal trip through his past." --Uncut

Before being turned on to this CD by a friend who shares my musical tastes, I was quite unaware of the work of Jakko Jakszyk. Oh, I'd probably heard him play before but in the past I didn't pay nearly as much attention to who the musicians in a band were as I did to the music itself. Now that I have heard him and am aware of his pedigree, I am surprised that many other prog fans are seemingly as unaware of his work as I was.
Though it took me a while to get into it, The Bruised Romantic Glee Club turns out to be quite an interesting recording with many different elements of interest beyond prog. The first disc consists of mostly Jakszyk originals while the second dredges up some works of influence from long ago. On disc 1, my favorites are: The title cut, which is imbued with prog elements; Catley's Ashes, a tune that evokes both King Crimson and Passport; the most excellent Doxy, Dali, and Duchamp; Srebenica, so evocative of Jeff Beck; and finally When We Go Home, a song that brings to mind the work of Michael Franks. About the only song I dislike is the bland Highgate Hill.
On disc 2, my favorites are: the jazz-tinged pop of As Long As He Lies Perfectly Still; the Crimsonian sounds of Pictures of an Indian City; and the jazz-fusion of Nirvana For Mice. The ones I don't care for are too short and lacking in substance: That Still and Perfect Summer, Astral Projection In Pinner, and the closing cut Soon After.
Prog fans should be delighted by the participation of such luminaries as Mel Collins, Robert Fripp, and Gavin Harrison in this project. This set is accompanied by a useful booklet that contains a few pictures, album info, commentary on each song, and lyrics where appropriate. If you are one who enjoys hearing something that goes beyond the ordinary, then I highly recommend Jakko Jakczyk's Bruised Romantic Glee Club. Get it while it remains available!

he may have a funny name and a bad haircut, but this is the real deal, Not sure how this flew under my radar, but after seeing Jakko as the front man for King Crimson this year, my interest was piqued. Solid album, decent production and great musicianship a solid entry into the prog catalog

Having first heard Jakko as part of The Lodge back in the late 80's with John Greaves and Peter Blegvad, I was quite familiar with his abilities: Greaves and Blegvad have always worked with superior talents. He was also a member (for a brief time) of The Tangent - no slouch outfit there... As for this release, Jakko devotes one album (the originals) to being somewhat autobiographical. The second is the covers disk, featuring tracks by Soft Machine, Henry Cow(!) and two Crimson classics including a reworking of Pictures of a City rechristened as Pictures of an Indian City (with new lyrics from Peter Sinfield)! Support comes from Robert Fripp, Mel Collins, Gavin Harrison, Mark King, Danny Thompson and others. It's a superb offering that will sadly remain unheard by 99.9% of the buying public...
