Bounty Hunters in Warhammer need to be ruthless and diabolical!
This omnibus includes 13 short stories ranging from 20-200 pages each, featuring Brunner, a bounty hunter modeled after Clint Eastwood's Bounty Killer Characters. Instead of a six-shooter, Brunner carries a repeating crossbow, an enchanted sword blessed to fight the forces of Chaos, a black powder pistol, a gruesome knife called the "Headsman" and a few other tricks of the trade. Brunner isn't the smartest, the strongest, or the fastest, but he makes up for these things with sheer determination and a lack of conscience.
Although this book is composed of short stories, they appear in chronological order, and there are some recurring characters. Basically, Brunner travels around the Warhammer Universe collecting bounties (heads) for gold. In his adventures, he encounters knights, brigands, skaven, undead, elves, dwarves, orcs, and even a dragon. Some characters appear in multiple stories and if Brunner finds a new and powerful item or weapon in a story, it follows him through the series.
All of the stories take place in the Warhammer Universe. The world is a blend between Lord of the Rings and Germany when it was under the rule of the Holy Roman Empire. It's Gritty High Fantasy in a state of perpetual war and turmoil.
Characters come and go, but all of the stories revolve around Brunner. Brunner is 100% driven to catch his bounty dead or alive. He is loyal to his employer. Everyone else can be sacrificed for his personal gain. Simply stated, he's not a nice man.
The writing style improves as the book progresses. The first few stories are a bit rough and straightforward, but the later stories are very well written with complex plots and great descriptions of the environments that set the mood.
This book is loaded with exciting action. Brunner fights just about everything and he fights to win. Why bother with chivalry when a crossbow bolt to the back of the head will do the job? The action is pretty good and there's magic, skirmishes, undead, sword fights, foul creatures, and brawls.
There's horror, fantasy violence, gore, and non-descript sexual situations. (Basically a candle goes out and a good time is implied.)
For $10, you get 13 short stories and they range from pretty good to great. If you want to read about a ruthless bounty hunter in an unforgiving fantasy world, then you'll love this book.
Read it if you want a blend between Conan and the Clint Eastwood Spaghetti Westerns.
Avoid it if you need your heroes to be "good guys."
If you enjoyed this, definitely pick up Robert E. Howard's Conan the Barbarian Stories or the Savage Sword of Conan Comics. You might also enjoy Matthias Thulmann Witch Hunter, also written by CL Werner or Malus Darkblade by Dan Abnett.
and what a wonderful book this turned out to be. A really cool character with a stoic attitude and a weapon for every occasion! Sure he is alot like most of the characters that many other reviewers have mentioned but I think he can stand on his own. For me I just read him like he was presented, with no conceived notions and let him develop under my very nose, And that he did and he did not disappoint, I really like CL's writing style and how he brought Brunner to life and gave him a bunch of stories and situations to strut his bad self. Never boring and never slow a real page turner.
I will search out CL's other offerings and know I wont be disappointed, I suggest you do the same, because you certainly wouldnt want Brunner to show up at your door and ask you why you havent lol
When he rides into towns, folk get skittish because they know he's there for his bounty. Nothing is safe from his grim determination, not even dragons.
I really enjoyed this book because Brunner is the character that I've been waiting for. An evil and sadistic bounty hunter that cares for nothing but the hunt and respects nothing but the hunt. The book is full of short stories of those that thought they could escape. Lots of action, blood and guts with no romance to ruin the darkness. I would recommend this book to any Warhammer fantasy fans or anyone looking for an anti-hero that's not a peace loving pansy.
