I was worried about wearing out the grinder discs, but they only get slightly warm and it's still working fine four months later. Even if it does wear out, it's only about $20 to replace, and worth the saved effort.
In my experience: 18 grams take about 4 minutes to grind finely, more if the beans are darker roasts (if the beans are oily the gears won't catch the bean as easily as some of the "drier" beans). I grind 40 grams every morning - it takes me about 10 minutes. Be prepared to work out your arms. After a while, you'll develop techniques - key is to use BOTH hands/arms to grind. Instead of holding the body still and spinning the handle, you can half the diameter of the grind spin by tandem spinning the handle and the body.
Also, cleaning isn't perfectly ideal - I'm pretty handy with small electronics, so this shouldn't have been a problem. I took it apart to clean (you'll have to clean it pretty frequently depending on how clean you are and how much you grind) but when I put it back together, it just didn't work the same. The center burr gear just wouldn't center and sometimes it rubs up against the coupling gear. The grind catcher is actually a plastic cup inside the metal cylinder. The bottom corner of the clear plastic cup caught my grinds and I would have to tap pretty hard to get it out. I grind pretty oily beans so the walls were always covered with grind stuck to the wall.
After about 30 uses, I got tired of manual grinding. I got the Bodum Bistro Electric Burr Coffee Grinder. It's so worth it!
I have an electric coffee grinder myself, so I did wonder whether a manual one would work as well. I didn’t want to give my son another electrical appliance for school as they do limit those items in the dorms. I was actually quite pleasantly surprised with the efficacy of this product.
The grinder arrives in one piece with the handle/crank packaged separately. You fit the crank onto the bolt on the top of the unit. It doesn’t screw on, it just rests on top, but it is no problem to turn it without it coming off. I had been nervous the crank would fly off in my hand while I was turning it, but it stayed put quite well, even though the grinder itself wants to move around while you’re using it. I found that bracing it against the countertop worked well for me.
The unit comes apart with a compartment for the whole beans and then an empty receptacle for the grounds. The part holding the beans has a screw under it which you adjust by turning it one way or the other, depending on how fine or coarse you want your grounds to be. I wanted mine to be fine so that I could fill a reusable K-cup for my Keurig.
You do have to turn the crank for a few minutes to get enough grounds to fill a one-cup K-cup, but it wasn’t terribly long and I got it filled enough to make my morning coffee without any trouble.
As mentioned above, I was a little worried about how well this item would work, so the results made me pretty happy. I think my son is going to be quite pleased with this item and I’m thinking getting another one as a gift for a friend who is also a coffee aficionado and likes to use fresh beans.
I received this item at a discount in exchange for an honest review. My opinion is my honest one based on my experience using this coffee grinder, as shown in the video.
