Song of the Penguin Emperor

Greetings from the South Pole!

I am thrilled to be spending the winter here, observing an isolated colony of Emperor penguins from my tiny shelter. Think of it-- the only human being on this vast, vanishing terrain--just me and the penguins. I will learn things about their winter behavior patterns that no one has ever known! Humbling.

I was able to recover the supplies from the airlift the other day. Can't believe that's the last contact I'll have with civilization for three months! Thanks for all the canned peaches and the brownies. No doubt they will give me cheer during the long, sunless winter. Am I crazy to be looking forward to this?

BTW, something is wrong with the toothbrush you sent-- it makes an annoying sound when you try to brush with it. It works, though, so why am I complaining?

(Week 2)

Hi, again. South Pole here.

Boy, they weren't kidding when they said it gets dark down here. Almost no light at all.

I've been studying the penguin colony through infrared goggles. It seems the females have transferred the eggs to the males, who are huddled around them. They stand in a big circle, sheltering themselves from the wind. It's cold as f#$! down here, that's for sure.

I finally figured out what was wrong with the toothbrush. It's apparently "music" coming out of the darn thing-- a woman singing what sounds like a nursery rhyme, only more repetitive. I tried wrapping the handle with gauze to muffle it, but the sound keeps coming out. The singer refers to herself as "J.B."-- remind me not to listen to her when I get back! Ha ha.

Anyway, am continuing to use the toothbrush, as I have been very much enjoying the brownies and canned peaches! They are keeping my spirits up. And if I can discover anything to help this penguin colony increase their reproduction rate, it will have all been worth it.

South Pole here. The blackness is total now. The cold, bitter.

I can barely make out the penguins, even with the infrared. They keep their backs to me, as if protecting some dark secret.

Have stopped using the toothbrush. It's not worth it. Still enjoying brownies and peaches, though.

Just ten more weeks to go.

(Week 4)

South Pole.

I have a terrible toothache, probably from the brownies and canned peaches. I tried to start brushing again, though it is terribly difficult. Even when it is not playing, the song remains in my head for hours-- perhaps days. No way to tell in this dark hell. Her voice haunts my dreams.

The penguins appear menacing.

(Week 5)

The tooth has gone septic. The pain is excruciating.

I have been forced to use the toothbrush again. It is my only contact with the human world-- yet the voice seems to not only lack humanity, but to mock it.

The "music" is insipid to the point of actual cruelty, as if you paired a ringtone of elevator music with a Hallmark card translated from Japanese. A computer has tried to keep the singer within the proper key, but her horribly reedy, flat and lifeless voice is, if anything, less human than the computer. It drones on and on like a mockingbird from an apocalypse.

I fear for my sanity.

(Week 6)

I have buried the tooshbruth-- is that the right word? Wait, no, toothbrush.

I have buried it, thrown away the brownies and peaches, and will last the winter on penguin meat. I think this is the right thing to do.

(Week 7)

Penguins running low. Dug up the toothbrush, and have started listening to it again. I kind of like it.

(Week 8)

Penguins gone. Have made a coat from their hides. I am the Penguin Emperor now.

Have been listening to the song over and over and over and over. I will fly to the Land of Summer where the Toothbrush Lady lives. I love you, J.B. I la la la la la la la la love you.

The time is now.

Capt. Marvin Gillespie's body was recovered 50 yards from his encampment on the Larsen Ice Shelf, his body draped in a horrific moo-moo of penguin pelts, his hands still clutching the toothbrush, which continued to play Justin Bieber's "Love Me." Said Sgt. Phil Bradmoore, who discovered the scene the following spring, "It was horrible. I don't think I'll ever get it out of my head."

I gave this four stars because the brush comes in 2 pieces that you have to snap together. I'm not sure why because the box is big enough to accommodate the entire length of the brush. This only makes it easier for kids to unsnap and misplace. Also the bottom half of the brush which covers the batteries comes off a little too easily. Therefore exposing them to little hands and water. Other than these two things the brush is made well and the songs are loud and lengthy. My daughter at 2 years old loves to brush her teeth and I often have to trick her into putting it back and not walk around the house with it!

I purchased this product for a friend of mine's little girl. It came as described and was shipped on time. The girl opened it immediately and started playing it. She wanted to go right then to brush her teeth! The parents thanked me(even though they aren't as crazy about Justin as their daughter is). The fact that it plays for 2 minutes is awesome! I told her she had to brush her teeth the whole time he's singing! What a great idea and product! Thank you.

Bought this as an aside gift for my 6 year old granddaughter who can't get enough Bieber. She absolutely loved it. I think she loved it more than anything else she got for Christmas. I had heard someone saying it was a good gag gift for a christmas party and I thought of her.....not as a gag gift but as a useful item that included her Bieber obsession. She brushed her teeth so much we had to get new batteries within a couple of weeks.

The tooth brush looks great. But I should've known from the packaging that it was going to be terrible. When I opened the package, the box was already opened and looked like someone tried to add more tape on it. When I opened the tooth brush, the buttons didn't work. The place where you can put the battery were fused. They looked like someone spilled something over the batteries or something leaked out of them.
