Until I heard that Cara McKenna was writing Brutal Game. When I heard the news it was all over for me. I may have never thought I needed a second half, but once I knew it was coming I was over the moon! Yes, because I got additional story. More importantly, I got more Michael Flynn!
I’ve read the book now, and if there are any naysayers out there (I’ve never seen any) they should relax. If you were worried at all that a continuation wouldn’t be as good as the original, well to you I say -there’s always only one original, but Brutal Game was definitely a solid follow up. It contained all the heat, and all the tenderness. It was honest, and sometimes it was deliciously abrasive.
What I loved the most about Brutal Game, and actually it’s what I also loved most about Willing Victim, is that there isn’t any undue angst. I love that even though Flynn can be a bit of a turd sometimes, he was not a coward. He’s refreshingly honest and upfront, and he doesn’t let petty bulls*** ruin a good thing.
I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, there are way too many books (particularly in this genre) that rely heavily on a lack of communication to create drama. The best books don’t need that crutch, and the Flynn & Laurel Duology are definitely two of the best books.
As a HUGE fan, stalker, lover and obsessor of Willing Victim.....imagine my overwhelming joy when I happened upon a Goodreads page and found that Willing Victim now has a (Flynn & Laurel #1) added to the title and a (Flynn & Laurel #2) had slipped by me! OMFG...I know right-where have I been? Under a rock you say?
I've lost track of how many times I've re-read WV so my expectation were uber high going into this book and it DID NOT disappoint!!
The sexy dialogue, hot sex, chemistry, Laurel's oddities, Flynn's...well....everything, it was all there with a twist. Thank the mother of all that's holy the author stayed true to the characters!!! The struggles and indecision that threaten to make or break Flynn & Laurel was so well done and just so...well..dammit I don't have words for it! It just felt like I was right there in their living room or inside their heads as they struggled. I loved every minute!
Flynn and Laurel are seeing in each other. More importantly they're enjoying one another and especially Flynn's kinky side. It was a quick read but packed with a lot of emotions. I won't give too much away but only say that these two characters, Laurel and Flynn crept under my skin in the best way possible. They experienced a loss and how they chose to deal with it was the interesting part mainly because I saw new sides of Flynn and Laurel. Yes, their chemistry was still fantastic and so was their interactions in and out of bed.
This duet was fast paced with two strong, flawed but beautifully layered characters. I was entertained from start to finish. Brutal Game was the perfect conclusion to Laurel and Flynn's story.
I struggled a little bit with the rating for this book. My first instinct was to give it 3 stars because of my feelings toward Laurel and her clueless/selfish actions in this book. However, after further consideration and a little more thought, I don't think that's a fair rating. The book's good and is probably a solid 4, but because I stayed aggravated with Laurel, I believe that strongly affected how much I enjoyed it. But honestly, Laurel's actions were probably close to how things would have played out in real life. I'm fortunate to have no personal experience with this, and even though I didn't like how Laurel handled things, they were probably accurate. Sorry, I can't explain more without giving away a major spoiler. I'll just say that I adored Flynn and wanted to wrap him up in a big ol' hug. He's such a loving and understanding man. His patience with Laurel and selflessness is not a characteristic a lot of men have. He put his feelings on the back burner for her and she was too wrapped up in herself to see him.
In the end you're left smiling knowing these two will get their happy ending.
I loved Willing Victim and I loved this sequel. I didn't particularly like the twist the story took, but that takes nothing away from the fact that this is a great book with fully developed characters, terrific dialogue and a satisfying story. As with every Cara McKenna book, you will not be disappointed.
