Buck Knives Famous 110 Folding Hunter
The Folding Hunter has set the standard for folding lock blade knives for generations. The high quality materials, experienced craftsmen, and attention to every detail, are just a few reasons Buck Knives one of the top brands in the cutlery industry.
Buck's Folding Hunter was created in 1963 when Al Buck decided that a revolutionary folding lockblade knife was needed by outdoorsmen who wanted a sturdy knife but did not want to carry a long fixed-blade knife. The challenge was to combine the strengths of a fixed blade knife into a good-looking, reliable folding knife. Within two years it was the No. 1 selling sports knife in the world! The Folding Hunter, after more than 39 years, is an iconic knife known throughout the world.

Family Owned - Over 100 Years!
A young Kansas blacksmith apprentice named Hoyt Buck was looking for a better way to temper steel so it would hold an edge longer. His unique approach produced the first Buck Knife in 1902. Hoyt made each knife by hand, using worn-out file blades as raw material. His handy work was greatly appreciated during World War II. Hoyt's eldest son Al had relocated from the Pacific Northwest to San Diego, California after finishing a stint in the navy a decade earlier. Hoyt and his wife, Daisy, moved in with Al and his young family in 1945 and set up shop as H.H. Buck and Son.
Following the death of his father, Al kept the fledgling custom knife business going until incorporating Buck Knives, Inc. in 1961. Al Buck revolutionized the knife industry in 1964 with the Model 110 Folding Hunter. The folding 'lockblade' knife made Buck a leader. A position we proudly hold today. Hoyt and Al Buck's ingenuity may have put the company on the map, but it is our ongoing commitment to developing innovative new products and improving what we have by third and fourth generation Buck family members that have made Buck the successful knife maker it is today. Frankly, it is what our customers expect from a Buck.

Paul Bos Heat Treatment
We give credit where credit is due. Without this man, we would not have the patented heat treating system that has made our blades so legendary.
Paul Bos, a nationally known heat-treat authority has been heat-treating since 1956. Before his retirement from Buck Knives in 2010, he served 70% of America's custom knife makers as well as overseeing all of the heat-treating in Buck Knives factory, where he was able to consult with Buck's engineers. Paul's link to Buck Knives goes back to his early years when he worked on custom knives for Al Buck in the late 1950s. Buck Knives continues to operate Paul's heat treating business out of our factory, led now by Paul Farner who worked under Bos for many years
The process Bos developed, which involves heating, freezing, and then reheating of the steel is like none other in the business, and is why Buck knives are famous for being sharper out of the box and staying sharp longer.
In 2007 Bos was the recipient of the Blade Magazine Industry Achievement Award for the contributions and advances he made in heat treating technology. Furthermore, in 2010 he was inducted into the 'Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame' in recognition of nearly 50 years as the foremost authority on the heat treatment of steel for knife blades.
Even in his retirement, Bos continues in an advisory role for Buck Knives, and makes trips to the Idaho plant as needed.

Buck has many models to pick from, so my choice came down to price/size. I wanted one that would be legal to carry in ALL states (which, as far as I know, the limit on size is 4" blade in every state, although I do believe NYC has a 2" limit.) And I wanted to keep the cost under $30. And it had to be a locking knife, I happen to be fond of my fingers :)
This is a beautiful knife. Smooth, well-polished, tight, sharp. I've always loved the wood & brass type knives. It's so pretty I don't know that I want to scuff it up actually using it! :)
I'm dinging it 1 star for how HARD it is to close, although I can see this as a feature not a bug - as I'd rather have to work at closing it than have it close accidentally.
BTW, for the people complaining about the sheath. The smell is the boot-black polish. The rivet is now covered with a thin piece of leather sewn in. The only problem I have about the sheath will bleed polish/dye if it gets wet. But this is true of just about any leather. I wasn't planning to use the sheath anyway, I didn't realize it even came with a sheath until the package arrived :)
Overall, very happy with this knife. It's well worth the price to get the best.
It opens and closes solidly. Slightly stiff to close and yes, you do need to use two hands, but this was never a problem.
Everything about this knife screams 'quality'. It looks and feels like a work of art. The blade was super sharp out of the box and is still as sharp after all the abuse I put it through.
I would recommend this knife to anyone looking for a knife to last them a lifetime.
