These folks do an admirable job overcoming strange customs and trying to distance themselves from a boorish compatriot who believes himself superior to any of the locals.
It started off slow but picked up speed and humour along the way . I was not ready for the ending and was sad the trip was over...for now. If you have ever wanted to live overseas ...read this book..then think again.
A real fun read. Loved it!
But Victor manages to imbue his stories with such personality! He lets you in on the funny conversations that ensue when there are struggles in a foreign language. His character descriptions are apt. The pleasure he takes in describing the life, and the landscape, in his mountain aerie on the Greek peninsula is apparent in his prose. It is beautifully descriptive without becoming twee.
A couple of other expat memoirs that I have read recently were little more than dry exposition, records of what happened, told after the fact. I didn't always finish reading them.
Victor puts you in the story, seeing the crazy as it takes place, and having a laugh - or a fright! - with him.
The tales he tells may occasionally stretch to hyperbole, yet they remain believable.
I can see them as a perfect subject for a BBC comedy, already picturing some of my favorite actors in the various roles. It would be a riot!
I have BOUGHT all ten volumes to make sure I always have them. I'm considering buying the paperbacks. as well, since they are more comfortable to use for bedtime reading.
Every book has now been read twice, and I'm looking forward to volume 11.

Got the impression they thought they were superior to others in the village.
They seemed quite pleased they had a better knowledge than some of the other ex pats, but they couldn't even get the name of the man who had owned the house they bought, they kept calling him Pedro!
.they were in Greece not Spain!
The book is mainly about the author (Victor) and his wife (Marigold) embarking on retirement in a remote Greek mountain village. Victor's take on learning the Geek language and all the village characters reaction to this is very funny and there are a few misunderstandings along the way.
10 out of 10!
