Interestingly, Queen Elizabeth thinks of Buckingham Palace as "the office" and Windsor Castle as "home" where she retreats for the weekends. This book first details the architectural history of the palace. Then it discusses the occupants of the palace, and how they used the palace. Occupants include Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, King George V and Queen Mary, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth and the present day Queen Elizabeth.
Then you are taken on a tour of the Palace including the State Rooms, Guard Chamber, Green Drawing Room, Throne Room, Picture Gallery, Ballroom, State Dining Room, Blue Drawing Room, Music Room, White Drawing Room, and Bow Room. The book is well-organized and visually attractive. It is easy to read and a great introductory book to this historic building. You may wish there were some larger images and more of them. There are over 120 images. The book is paperback and not large - probably the perfect size for a guide book when you are walking and don't want to carry something heavy. If you want an introduction to Buckingham Palace, this offers many tantalizing details and accompanying images.
If you've been on the tour, I have, you'll relive many memories and want to make a return visit. If you're just planning a trip buy this book and take lots of notes- every room is worth a look. You'll get details here you might otherwise miss or not get a good enough look at during your visit.
Worth owning even if you could care less about the British Royal Family.
