I now understand why they don't exist at target. The box that arrived was three feet tall and weighed about ten pounds! That's not how pillows are supposed to work.
The pillow arrives a bit overstuffed. I think you're supposed to open it up and scoop out some of the hulls to be added back in when the pillow eventually starts collapsing. Scooping, storing and remembering a big bag of buckwheat hulls is a tall order, and you're not going to do it. It's okay. More hulls are easy to order online once the included hulls start to lose their elasticity. Scoop out a quarter of the old ones, add in a similar amount of new ones, mix it up and you're set. These pillows are much more upgradable and futureproof than $10 pillows with synthetic filling. From what I've read, it takes a couple years before replacing the hulls is something you have to worry about. One point buckwheat.
Sleeping on the pillow is a little bit strange for the first night, but you quickly get used to the texture and sounds that it brings to your bed. It supports you much like a memory foam pillow, but with a more breathable filling that provides nice ventilation. The sound of the hulls is by no means loud, and shouldn't keep anybody up at night. It's a lot like that beanbag chair that you used to fall asleep on as a kid. There's a bit of rustling when you reposition your head, but it's otherwise silent and supportive.
My first night sleeping at a hotel after getting this pillow was a little bit disappointing. I missed my buckwheat hull pillow, and really noticed the sensation of my head sinking into the hotel pillow. I think that night was the first affirmation that the buckwheat hull pillow was a nice thing that I wouldn't want to give up.
This is a very polarizing pillow. Either it makes a big difference in the way you sleep and you love it, or the buckwheat hulls are too noisy and noticeable, making you hate the thing. Fortunately, the very small amount of one-star reviews on this pillow are a very good indicator that most people fall into the first camp. $35 is an extremely small price to pay for what could potentially be much more satisfying nights of sleep.
I found that straight out of the box, I didn't need to buy any extra filling as this is filled perfectly for me, though it looked pretty flat to me. In fact, I considered adding more buckwheat to it, but decided trust the manufacturers judgement. Glad I did.
For some saying they don't have a zipper on their pillow. Yeah, you do. It's just so unobtrusive that you won't see it unless you look for it. It's on the opposite end of the tag end. I put my pillow into the pillow case with the tag end going in first. Get it started and then hold "ears" from the open end with pillow case and pillow together so they're level and while holding the ears up in the air, the bulk of the pillow gently falls into the case. Then smoothed the buckwheat out so that the pillow was flat. I never even noticed the zipper until I went LOOKING for it (and normally, I'm pretty observant). Teeny tiny zipper on a teeny tiny track. Opened it to make sure it worked and it does just fine.
When I went to bed, I lay down on it and realized I needed to make a small divot for my head. I'm a side sleeper and realized I needed to make a small "ridge" for my neck as well. Pulled on my CPAP headgear and DIED for about 4 hrs (when my grandson awakened me). I awakened refreshed and NO NECK tension!!! First time in MONTHS that has happened. And then I was seeing a chiropractor twice a week.
I thought there might be a "learning curve" to sleeping on this pillow as I have "issues" with pillows and in general am a "cranky" sleeper. If things are not just so, I don't sleep well. Not so with this pillow! The pillow was just firm enough that my CPAP hose couldn't slip down between the pillow and the headboard (up to this point, a continuous problem causing me to awaken and readjust the tubing).
Some reviewers say this pillow is heavy, but I didn't find that to be so for me. It does weigh more than my other pillows, but it wasn't "heavy" to move around, though as I indicated, I set it and forgot it. I side sleep, but awakened on my back and was comfortable and refreshed even in that position and with so little sleep.
I would give this pillow a 10+ if I could. And down the road, I certainly will be purchasing another one.
Love, love, love it.
