There are several books by author John Goldrosen about Buddy Holly. This is his 1979 update of a book first printed in 1975. If your main interest is in Buddy’s music and recording sessions, then this book should be in your library. Not only do you get lots of information on the songs and sessions, but you get a detailed discography that is current up to 1979. Researching Buddy’s music can be very confusing because he often recorded the same song several times and many of them were overdubbed after his death. An good example is “Rock Around With Ollie Vee” which was released on a Decca album and Coral single from a July 1956 session and on a Decca single from a November 1956 recording. It takes a whole lot of research to get all of facts right. This book will help with some of these questions, but there are still areas that require digging on the internet or from other sources. You can see that all of his CD reissues will not be discussed in this book since they are post 1980. If you are looking for stories about his love life, family history and troubles with Norman Petty over money then you should check out other options since they are only covered lightly here.

I wish someone who has also read Mr. Goldrosen’s “Remembering Buddy” published in 2001 would review how the two books differ. All I can say is that this is a great book about his music.

There are a lot of books about Buddy Holly. Some are good and not so good. This one is probably the best one about him. A lot of his family and friends state that this is as close to the truth about his life as any of the books that has been written. Members of the Crickets (His Band), his widow (Maria Elena Holly), and even his mother (Mrs. Ella Holly), state it the most truthful and interesting book about his life and music. I have loved his music since the first time I heard his song, "Oh Boy". I've been hooked ever since then. His music has more energy than anybody I've heard in my whole life. It is just as fresh today as it was when he first recorded it back in the 1950's. His life is so interesting . So many stories that it is hard to put this book down. He was one of a kind performer. So much of his music was highly innovative, he created many new recording methods that other artists still use until this day. Long live Buddy Holly.
