1. Pretty straight forward on the onset. There's a proprietary auto initial setup wizard by Buffalo that will get 95% of users up and running easily. I think it's a smart move by Buffalo as it keeps the non-techies away from some of the over clocking settings of DD-WRT that can burn up the router rather quickly over time (month or so).
2. The wireless radio does in fact get pretty good distance at the default 20db signal strength. I tried at 25db and 30db, it seems 20db is the max. That said at 20db it does a great job as far as spectrum coverage.
3. It didn't play nice with the radio in my Roku. I had to constantly reset the Roku. My Roku does't have this issue with other routers running the same encryption type and 2.4 frequency.
4. It seizes and needs to be rebooted when it gets to about 150 concurrent P2P TCP connections. This is bad news for people using games that rely on P2P networking (i.e. PS3 Home and I suspect PS4 game downloading though that tech is yet to be technically diagrammed), which is similar technology torrent uses. Adjusting the IP Filter setting described in the following link did not alleviate the issue:
http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Router_Slowdown
5. While it has DD-WRT, it doesn't have "all" the features. Specifically it is missing the Repeater Bridge mode that allows the router to act both as bridge for wired over wireless hub and wireless repeater/extender at the same time. This was one of the big features that DD-WRT v24 brought to the table and is missing from the Buffalo build for this router.
What I did:
I ended up using my old router this router was to replace. I fell back to my DD-WRT flashed Linksys e2000:
http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Linksys-E2000-Advanced-Wireless-N-Router/dp/B003B20F54/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1371104950&sr=8-1&keywords=linksys+e2000
As a comparison, over a wired connection, on my e2000 I was able to download Ubuntu 12.04 in about 6 minutes. On the WHR-300HP it seized twice, and only downloaded the image after I set the max connections to 100 within my software client. Once I did that it downloaded in about 11 minutes. To give perspective, the e2000 was able to handle 300+ simultaneous connections with out seizing.
So I have since made my e2000 my main router once again and am using this WHR-300HP as a wired to wireless bridge for my PS3; essentially upgrading my PS3 wireless connection from G to N. Note, as I stated earlier, even though it's bridged it can not function as a wireless repeater at the same time as most people familiar with DD-WRT would expect; for instance I used my e2000 as both a wireless bridge and repeater simultaneously. It is possible to use the WHR-300HP as a bridge or a repeater, just not both at the same time. At least, if it is possible the technique escaped me long enough for me to give up on it.
All that said, I am still looking for a decent wireless 300mbps capable dd-wrt router. The e2000 is 150mbps max, though it does consistently connect at high rates even at distance.
The WHR-300HP router does not meet my main routing needs but is doing a decent job of bridging my PS3 over wireless to my e2000; though I suspect most casual internet surfers will like the WHR-300HP due to its good range.
So far we've had this baby running for a little over a month with no issues. The slim design is a real bonus as my desk is already at capacity with a full-tower case, two monitors, full size keyboard and printer on it. The signal is surprisingly strong. We live in a one bedroom on the third floor and I get wireless signal about a half city block away from home via my cell phone. We have something like 10 devices connected via wifi and there has yet to be any issues with it. I may have messed up something in the setup, but currently my wired PC gets considerable lag when my wireless PS3 is streaming movies. nothing major, but Skype calls get distorted from time to time.
Speaking of setup, talk about a breeze! The UI is kinda ugly, but the instructions are simple enough to follow for the basics. I can see where a lot of the features would come in handy, but personally I didn't need them, I just wanted a reliable product and most of my IT friends said Buffalo was the way to go. So far, with intense gaming sessions, livestreaming, and general home use it holds up great!
