Awesome omnidirection router with awesome performance

I bought this router while back in 2011. For years it was rock solid and never had any problems, it didn't need reboots, it just worked. It delivered wifi speed up to 150Mbps using TWC. The router gave up on me after 7 years of usage, it started having problems, need to reboot more often and the WiFi connection would start dropping out pretty frequently. The firmware update is not supported anymore but still worked even though unstable. It died right after when spectrum technician told us that we need to have router that has 5G capability. Finally, I replaced this router with the new model that has 5G compatibility. Overall, I really like this router and not having reboot so frequent except the ages of router. The router was rock solid for 6+ years, so i have to give it a decent rating, even though it was frustrating near the end.

Well, where to start. I've been meaning to decommission my old, D-Link DIR-655 router for a while now; it's been running fine for the past 3 years, but as of late, I've been having issues with it - constant disconnects, signal fluctuations, and degraded throughput. It's become a hassle to reboot this thing once every couple of days. I tried numerous other routers to replace D-Link, like Netgear and Linksys, but everyone had their own fare share of issues. I actually ran Netgear for a month, until it committed suicide, and I had to return it. For anyone looking to replace the good trusty WRT54GL with a newer technology router, know it's no small feat. Competition is scarce and mostly it's a hit or miss type of affair. Enter WZR-300HP! Comes preloaded with DD-WRT right out of the box. Performance has been great, much faster than my old D-Link! So my here's my list of pros and cons.

Pros:
* DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (07/09/12) std - build 19438
* Better wireless range and signal strength
* Atheros AR7242 rev 1.1 CPU clocked at 400 MHz
* 64 MB of RAM
* Gigabit LAN: 4 Ports
* Gigabit WAN: 1 Port
* Wall mounting hardware included
* WDS (Thanks to DD-WRT)
* AOSS
* DLNA
* Setup Assistant available for simplified router configuration.

Cons:
* Some features are only available with the original Buffalo firmware.
* Move Engine (QoS) button is useless; does not work under DD-WRT.
* DD-WRT maybe overkill for novice users (Buffalo firmware on CD).
* No auto update for DD-WRT (you'll have to check the site periodically).
* DD-WRT QoS is a bit complex for average user.
* Antenna design is questionable (looks flimsy/cheap plastic).
* Needs to be in a well-ventilated area or may overheat (runs a bit hot).
* Guest wireless? I haven't found a way to configure that yet.

Conclusion:
This is probably the best bang for your buck at the present time. Features, stability, range, and price, all work in favor for this router. I highly recommended.

Update:
NAT Loopback option, under Security Tab DOES NOT WORK.

To enable NAT Loopback, save the following as a FIREWALL script in the COMMANDS section of the router config:

iptables -t nat -I POSTROUTING -o br0 -s 192.168.x.0/24 -d 192.168.x.0/24 -j MASQUERADE

Make sure to replace the 'x' in the IP's.

Great device, just a little confusing to hook up on your own.

This is a great router. I recently purchased the XBOX ONE and did some research as to what router firmware is best for running the XBOX ONE console and found that the DD-WRT is one of the best options for firmware. This router comes with it already installed and ready to go. It has performed flawlessly so far since we set it up. The setting up part was a little confusing however due to the various set up guides. If you get this product and are just doing the basic set up because you are like me and don't know how to do the special advanced stuff, just go with the easy quick set up guide. Avoid the more detailed set up chart which made things difficult for me. Also, I am using this with my Xfinity internet and my Motorola cable Modem and it works well together. My cable guy however had not seen this router before and left without touching it. He plugged my modem into my computer which caused more problems. If you are connecting this to a modem, make sure you plug the modem into the router first, not your computer. Most modems I have found will have only one IP address that it sends to the first item it recognizes. If this is not your router, it won't work unless you perform a reset on both the router and the modem. If I knew to only use the quick set up guide and that the modem needed to be plugged into the router first, I would have not had any problems. Hopefully this is helpful because this is a great product as long as you have more of an idea of what to do to set it up.

Powerful and reliable so far

After about six months of use, I can say that I'm pretty happy with this router. The range and coverage in my 1300 sf house is very good. I can actually use the wifi reliably with my tablet in the garage or the back yard with no problems.

The speeds are good (not amazing).

Most importantly, the wifi hasn't crashed once since I've set it up. A lot of much more expensive routers don't even bother to go for that anymore -- they sell you speed and features that you might not need, and in exchange you pay dearly in reliability.

I went with the Buffalo brand because these are the only home-class routers which don't seem to be universally panned these days. I've personally owned a shoddy Belkin and a crumby Linksys (now just called Cisco as if to bolster their failing street-cred) -- this Buffalo model really puts 'em down hard.

If you go one model higher, you'll get dual-band (which you think you'll use, but you probably won't since most non-computer equipment still doesn't support 5ghz). The feedback seems to trend downward once you go to the dual-band units, so unless you're sure that you'll get the best of it, still with a simpler model like this. Just be sure to get gigabit LAN capability.
