I just want to make something clear right now -- this drive reads and writes incredibly fast, IF you use it correctly. That means you need to have it connected to a USB3 port, and you need to keep the caching feature in the software on. As long as you keep those requirements in mind - this drive is amazing.

The secret to this drive is that it has a 1 GB cache of DDR3 memory, which allows the drive to write/read at ridiculous speeds. Used in conjunction with an SSD in my computer, I've gotten sustained speeds of roughly 200 MBps - read and write. As far as I've researched, that is the fastest a drive has hit yet.

The Buffalo software that's on the drive is pretty much unnecessary - again, unless you plan on turning off the cache ability, which you shouldn't - the software is really superfluous. You could use SecureLock to encrypt the drive - I find it's a little slow. I use BitLocker - works fine. You can also use any of the various 3rd party encryption tools out there...

Just a couple of concerns -- one, there's only one drive in here. So if you're paranoid about losing data, you may want another backup. Another thing is that there's no easy way to switch out the drive. This is like the pie in the sky for me - it would be nice if external drive makers made this easier to do - especially if the drive does fail. The third thing you'll need to be careful of -- since the drive temporarily writes to a DDR cache, if the drive loses power while data is in the cache, it's gone. Period. Had a power outage when I was copying data (thank goodness I was just copying), and there appears to be no temp power supply in the drive to allow the data that's in the cache to finish copying to the actual HDD. So it disappeared.

This drive maybe fast but it is very unreliable. The first one failed just a few days past Amazon's 1-month replacement. So I called BuffaloTech and got a RMA number. Had to pay for the $30 shipping. Then this replacement failed again in just 2 months. Both drives had the same problem -- it spins up when plugged in but the drive cannot be mounted. Explained the problem to BuffaloTech support but no explanation or solution was provided to recover the files, so all files were lost.

Unfortunately, I can not recommend this product. After 1 month of use, the unit/drive has failed. Luckily, I never trust my data in one spot and have backups of all my files, in this case video. I don't know if this is a drive failure or the Buffalo enclosure itself but obviously, failure after one month is unacceptable. Reading the other reviews, it seems this drive is either hit or miss so if you buy this device you're gambling with your data.

Bought one which work beautifully for 3 days then died. Had it replaced and that one worked beautifully for exactly 31 days (1 day outside amazons return/replacement policy) then died. Something very wrong with these drives.

I read the helpful reviews and purchased the product on 08/27/2013. It has already catastrophically failed (10/20/2013).. Due to the sensitive nature of the files written to the drive, I will not be returning it. Another reviewer wondered if the positive reviews were real. I wonder about that too. So I'm down about $150. Purchase one if you wish, but I've bought my last Buffalo product..

I am sure this is a good product and it is top rated, but I am writing to alert consumers to compatibility issues (hence the 3 star rating from me). I wanted this external hard drive for my aging Dell computer with Windows 7. The PC works well in every other respect. I just wanted backup protection for family photos and files. It did not work and I returned it. Let me explain, but first, some context: I buy a lot from Amazon, can only recall one other item I have ever returned, and have only written a handful of reviews. Also, I am computer literate but not very tech savvy. I did a quick scan of product reviews for any issues. My assumption was that almost everything today is compatible and “plug and play.” That proved true with the external hard drive we bought for my wife’s Mac (WD My Book Studio 3TB Mac External Hard Drive Storage USB 3.0) but it was not the case with the Buffalo and my PC. I tried backing up with both the software on the Buffalo (which was not user friendly in my opinion) and the Windows backup software, which was easier to use. Neither worked. Something about my Windows 7 system not being compatible with a 3TB external hard drive. I tried to back up several times and always got the error code: 0x8078002A. There is a lot of internet/blog chatter on this issue but no easy and reliable solution that I could find. I contacted Buffalo and they responded quickly, politely and with the observation that the problem might be related to the fact that the hard drive uses USB 3.0 and my computer has USB 2.0. I thought USB 3.0’s were all backward compatible and just slower if you plugged into a USB 2.0. Anyway, nice product and responsive customer service, but be careful if you are trying to match this up with a Windows 7 PC. Maybe this review will prompt a computer-savvy guy/gal to lay down some clear rules of the road on how best to match up external back up drives and operating systems.
