In terms of physical attributes it's small and slightly thicker than you might expect. Certainly thicker than my WD portable drives. The light glows either green for USB2, or blue for USB3. It maintains a steady glow when idle and flashes when transferring data. The casing feels solid but as with all hard drives I wouldn't want to throw it around too much. There's not much heat generated after prolonged periods of usage.
In terms of performance I can only comment on USB2 speeds. It gets about 22mb/sec, which is 3mb/sec more than my Seagate portable drive (both formatted as NTFS).
I've tested the drive on Windows 7, Windows Vista, Linux (Ubuntu, Arch and Fedora) and it works fine on all of them. It spends the majority of the time plugged into a Western Digital WD TV Live Streaming Media Player - WDBHG70000NBK-HESN where it performs brilliantly.
I was a bit dissapointed after I first hooked it up to my USB3 port which is an addon I installed. I already had another usb3 hard drive connected to it and it was pretty decent.
This drive though was pretty slow. I then hooked it up to a usb2 port and it was pretty decent. I grabbed another USB3 adapter off amazon that had a way to hook up to a sata power plug to give it extra juice.StarTech.com 4 Port SuperSpeed USB 3.0 PCI Express Card with SATA Power PEXUSB3S4 Well that did the trick and now it flys.
Very happy with it.

What I've discovered is that one of the applications included with this HDD, Turbo Copy (something like that), causes problems and indeed SLOWS DOWN the file transfer speed, if the files are considerably small in size.
For large files, hear me out...
Lately I've noticed that the Windows Explorer on my desktop fails every time when I try to transfer picture files from flash memories (CF 400x and SDHC Class 10). Somehow copying large RAW files has become a problem, which I've never encountered before. At first I thought it's my PC that's quitting. My 4 yr old PC is a Dell Studio XPS 9000 that has the 1st gen i7 CPU with 24gb RAM and EVGA 460SC. Everything is pretty much updated. I could not pinpoint the problem. Just when I was about to format my HDD and do a fresh installation of everything on my desktop, I tried the same method (flash memory + usb 2.0 card reader) with my laptop, which did not have this Buffalo software installed. Things worked like they should. Then it hit me...what if I uninstalled the Turbo Copy application (luckily this was separate from the main backup software)? I did just that, uninstalling that weak sauce software. Now my PC is running smooth again.
Mystery solved. Sometimes tiny things such as this can cause big problems. So save yourselves some trouble: do not install every application software that comes with this product.
