I have had this drive for around two months and have burned about 50 CDs and about 60 DVDs with it so far. I have also played a few CDs and watched a few DVDs on it too. It works with just one USB power cable on both my 2009 Mac mini (model 3,1) and my 2008 13in MacBook (model 4,1). The other USB cable wraps neatly under the DVD drive and is unnoticeable. The drive has a low profile and makes a minimal amount of noise. There is an LED that shines through the top back slit in the case. A blue light (which is just bright enough and quite slick looking in my opinion) indicates that it has sufficient power, but red means that you need to use the second USB cable for additional power. Of note, once there is a DVD in the drive, I can only eject it by ejecting it by clicking "eject" on my computer (the button on the DVD drive itself is non-responsive with a DVD in it). This has in no way been a problem for me. It only caused a bit of confusion when I first used it. It works just as I expected it to and is more aesthetically pleasing than I thought it would be. Great External DVD Drive for Playing/Burning CDs & DVDs

I bought this drive on Amazon through Buffalo Technology to use on my Mac mini (the internal DVD drive had failed on it).

I have had this drive for around two months and have burned about 50 CDs and about 60 DVDs with it so far. I have also played a few CDs and watched a few DVDs on it too. Worked once, cord too short

Update (Feb. 2014): The drive has been sitting on my desk unused since my original review. Today, I went to install another program using this external drive and it started to work just fine. Then the installation got "stuck" at a certain point and the drive made a sort of clicking noise. When I took the disc out, it had streaks in a circle about 1/4" in from the outer edge on the data side. Fortunately, I was able to get my internal drive to work for this particular installation and whatever those streaks were didn't affect it. As others have said, the cord is REALLY short. Not sure what they were thinking... Still haven't tried to burn any discs with it yet.

Original review (Dec. 2013): I got this because my internal CD/DVD burner was causing an installation error when trying to install a program from CD. This drive allowed me to install the program with no problems. The computer recognized it and installed the driver immediately. I haven't tried to burn any discs with it yet, but I like that it's external so that I can still use it when my PC eventually dies, because I don't plan to buy any more desktop towers in the future.

Low priced option with software, works with PC and Mac

Budget priced, USB powered and comes with its own burning software, this DVD writer drive also works with both the latest Windows and Mac operating systems. The worst I can say about it is that it's USB 2.0 and noticeably slow at only 8x speed.

This drive couldn't be simpler to install. Unbox it, plug it into an available USB port your PC or Mac and it should automatically be recognized, and universal drivers installed. Then put the included CD into the drive (open via a flush mounted button on the front of the drive). You may need to find the drive in the Control Panel or similar on your computer, or like with my new HP ENVY M6 TouchSmart Sleekbook Touch Screen Laptop - 15.6" Display / AMD Elite Quad-Core A10-5745M / 8GB Memory / 1TB HD / Windows 8 running Windows 8.1, you may be prompted to open the CD, run the CD or one of several other options.

When the CD is opened you are asked if you want to install the included Cyberlink software. It takes about five minutes to install it, and the Power2Go7 software installs, prompting you to register.

Options include creating data, music, and video discs (CD or DVD), and burning disc images or copying discs. You can also create mixed content CDs, erase discs, rip audio, and convert audio files. Photo gallery CDs or DVDs can be created as well.

The drive itself is quiet and a small blue light (thin line) appears on the top of the drive when it is connected and ready to use. A small green light blinks on the front of the drive when it's reading the disc. The integrated cable is short, but great for use with laptops. If you'll be using it with a desktop, you'll probably want to get a USB cable extender like this one: Mediabridge 2.0 USB Extension Cable (6 Feet) - A Male to A Female with Gold Plated Contacts.

I've put it through its paces by installing software, watching a DVD via VCL media software (free program used in place of Windows Media Player), and burned a DVD. All were accomplished easily, but a bit slower than I'm used to with my integrated drive on a similarly powered desktop PC.

I recommend this drive to Mac and PC users who have Macbooks or Ultrabooks and wish to have the option of an optical drive. The drive is well built and the included software a perk at this price point, and if you don't mind the 8X speed, it's a great deal!
