Enter the latest Buffy the Vampire Slayer board game from Jasco. They have kept the theme very much alive with fresh artwork that is inspired by the show along with excellent flavor text on cards. Add the Baddies of the Week and Big Bads from various seasons, along with certain artifacts and plot devices that fans will recognize and the game will most likely be interrupted by "I remember this one..." or "...oh crap, I wish we had <insert special item that was used to defeat Baddie in the show>". All of this means that this game is very much in the Buffy-verse.
Even better, it is a fun game so non-Buffy fans can still enjoy it (though they may end up asking why the appearance of a certain demon requires all the players to sing anything they want to communicate or risk adding to the Apocalypse track!) It uses similar mechanics to Pandemic where you have a map of Sunnydale that gets infested with Demons and Vampires as the turns progress. Each player takes actions to move/fight/search around the board trying to save townies while also gathering the items needed to defeat the Baddie of the Week. Once three of those are defeated, the Big Bad rears its (usually) ugly head and the gang has to hope they have all their ducks in a row or the Hellmouth will open and the world will be lost.
No dice are used. When randomness is needed, a card is drawn from the event deck which will have one of three symbols on it. If it matches what the requirement is asking for, success! This means that play goes fairly quickly once everyone understands the options and abilities.
We have played a few sessions of this and everyone has had a fun time. It is a lighter game (though not an easy game...we have won two and lost three) so even the games we lost were entertaining and memorable.
Cons about the game: (these are minor gripes)
Playable characters are Buffy, Willow, Xander, Giles, Angel, Spike. This means we might hopefully get to see Oz, Anya or Cordelia in an expansion at some point maybe?
All the minis in the game are cardboard. The art is good and the plastic stands work well, but some actual figures would be nice.
There is only a generic standee for 'Baddie of the Week'. Many of these are very iconic monsters that would have been GREAT to actually see on the map, stalking the heroes. Alternate artwork is available on Board Game Geek, but it would have been nice in the box.
Final verdict = FIVE STARS. Highly recommended for fans of Buffy or anyone looking for a lighter game similar to Pandemic.
There are different types of cards that help with taking down the bad guys. Items such as stakes (for dusting vampires), holy water (for stunning enemies), weapons (for slaying demons) help take out enemies. Artifacts may either help (slayer scythe) or hurt you (Box of Gavrok) during play. To take down the monsters-of-the-week and the Big Bad, you have to collect various items as specified on their card and have a certain amount of 'luck' to take them down.
It's a fun way to get back into the Buffy universe and try to take down the monsters that have all appeared on the show.
