A charming departure for Pairo

As a long-time fan of Preston Pairo's mysteries, this reader was delighted with his departure to the Romance genre in The Builder. Though the novel does contain mysterious elements and surprising twists, the plot develops around Brette's search for a sense of place and her evaluation of her life's choices. Pairo explores the themes of childhood loss and how healthy adults compensate for the pain of childhood and adolescence. Pairo, like Anne Tyler, shows a compassion for his female characters and develops Brette fully. As always in Pairo's works there are the quirky yet lovable minor characters: Phineas, the 70 year old lawyer who dispenses his daily wisdom behind his newspaper at a local diner; the odd-ball locals who make small town Eastern Shore come alive; and the church ladies who create a sense of community.
The novel's setting, for the most part, MD's Eastern Shore, is lovingly portrayed with vivid imagery enhancing Pairo's rich story telling.

I have now read three of Mr. Pairo's novels. The first two were mysteries. This one is a real contrast to the first two I read. I enjoyed all three but especially enjoyed The Builder. I could relate to the small town atmosphere as well as the down to earth builder. Excellent read and a nice story.
