A breath of fresh air that is so well written, this book really does shine a light. Barry Fitzgerald doesn't take the ever typical and contrarian view of sustainability but rather he presents so much possibility. He does this in a very balanced and easy manner by offering pragmatic and wholesome solutions to simply improving our personal and collective quality of life.
Never before have I found anyone who can create a possible future that is so considerate of all of the complexities of modern life with the ease and balance that Mr Fitzgerald does. You really find yourself cutting straight to the chase on evaluating each aspect of your life and how you go about living it. So many times I found myself asking who am I doing it for, me and mine or some modern economic/political anomaly.
His ideas on community, global finance and education really got me going I haven't stopped challenging myself on them since.
Truly great stuff!!!

Barry Fitzgerald's book gives us an insight into a very feasible alternative life style which is not such a huge `sea change' as you might think, but a very common sense approach as to how we could consider altering our life style to attain what we all ultimately strive for - better quality of life, health and happiness.
This book not only deals with the unsustainability of our current system but offers a solution which, in my view, is very doable albeit over a period of time. There is plenty of food for though to consider and some simple but great ideas on how we can change for the better and become more self reliant and less dependent on central government.
It's a very informative read which I have no hesitation in recommending.

Barry Fitzgerald presents us with a new and improved paradigm shift for the world in his new book "Building Cities of Gold." In it he shows us exactly what changes need to happen to sustain us in the coming years of the future. He believes that power must be put back into the hands of small communities of 100 to 200 people so that the current abuse of power will fall to the wayside. I believe this is a very important book. It tells us in no uncertain terms what we need to do to be happy in our lives again.
I was completely taken in by his step-by-step process for achieving a better world. He tells the reader section by section exactly what is going wrong in the world, such as the Earth is to be exploited at all costs and waste is somebody else's problem to be dealt with. Fitzgerald writes about sustainability in the areas of career, economy, and education with true caring and knowledge. I am just touching the tip of the iceberg here, though. There is so much more.
I also enjoyed Part Two, which tells the story of how such a community came to being. It was by complete happenstance that a few people started a new way of life that spread through the town of Hill Valley Plains like wildfire. Within five years the people there led a completely self-sustainable lifestyle. They were happier, healthier, and generally better off than they were before the changes took place in their community. This is nothing short of a miracle. I have to say I agree with Fitzgerald about the coming changes and how they must be dealt with. This is a great book for anyone who wants to know what's happening in our world and how we can really make it better. I give it five stars.

Found the book to be quite inspiring and one that supplies hope and solutions at a time in the world where we surely could use some.
Barry gives the reader much to 'chew on' and reflect upon and great tools to utilize to make not only their life, but each day more fulfilling.
The book is great! I suggest everyone purchase it, you won't be sorry.

Building Cities of Gold is really a discourse for our time. Barry Fitzgerald has sketched a view of the future that is both truly benign and utterly achievable. Building Cities of Gold challenges us to become conscious citizens of the planet who can shape the communities in which we live rather than powerless consumers regretting all the ways our world has gone astray.
