Concerning the vapor barriers: I've personally talked to three PhD-level building specialists about vapor barriers and they all said that the verdict is not in. In the case of the dry west, where the Upton's house is, prevention of thermal bridges is, by far, the most important design imperative. The authors address these two topics eloquently and thoroughly in this book. They are honest and humble in their analysis and stress the importance of research, seeking good advice and moisture management.
I found the authors' analysis of building science to be very enlightening, easy to understand and full of wisdom. I would encourage everyone interested in healthy home design to read this book. There is much to be learned from the Upton's hard work.
