4.0 out of 5 starsReviewed in combination with other Bulk Supplements products in an attempt to recreate a favorite pre-workout blend
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on June 3, 2016
I train fasted every morning, and combine my pre-workout with BCAAs with Glutamine to prevent soreness and muscle loss. The fasted training requires that my pre-workout be as devoid as possible of calories. After trying several different pre-workout supplements that met that profile, I found one that I felt worked pretty well and delivered on its promises. It produced a great pump and a smooth energy boost with no jitters or crash. There were two things about it that bothered me a little bit though - the price per dose, and the fact that it included 350mg of caffeine. I tolerate caffeine well, but wanted the option to reduce it or eliminate it for low/no caffeine days, or on days when I can predict that I'll be drinking lots of coffee at work.

In an attempt to recreate the formula of my favorite product, but sans-caffeine and at a lower price per dose, I purchased the following Bulk Supplements products from Amazon and combined them in the following amounts:

Pure Betatine Anhydrous 250grams package: 1 teaspoon
Pure L-Citruline DL Malate 2:1 powder 500 grams package: 1 tablespoon
Pure Beta Alanine powder 500grams package: 1 teaspoon

*Note that the amounts above are much greater than the recommended amounts on the Bulk Supplements product labels, but are very close to the dosages in the product I was using.

The product that I was using also included L-Ornathine, also available from Bulk Supplements brand. I may purchase the 250gram package of that at a later date and add to the cocktail at an amount of just under 1 teaspoon per dose.

So far, the experience of my experiment has been positive. Most importantly, I feel the effect of my cocktail is about the same - great pump, no soreness, comparable increase in energy and stamina as opposed to without. When I feel the need for caffeine, I take a single 200mg Caffeine Anhydrous pill that I also bought from Amazon (100 for six dollars).

As far as cost goes, the stuff I was using is about two dollars per serving. With the sizes that I purchased and the amounts that I'm using, my blend costs about seventy two cents per serving (less than half). If I were to add the L-Ornithine, the new cost would be just under a dollar a serving (still less than half).

The powders dissolve easily in filtered water. In 10-12 oz, my cocktail is about as acidic as strong lemonade and no less palatable. I tried it once without adding the BCAA+G and found that it was drinkable as-is; acidic, but not bitter or fowl-tasting. I tried adding pure stevia leaf extract (without erithrytol or other artificial sweeteners), but without the benefit of a flavor to enhance, that didn't really provide a flavor improvement. Perhaps some lemon extract might have coupled with the sweetener to make a nice blend. I purposely drink my mix before brushing my teeth in the morning, as I felt that drinking it afterward might have caused some sensitivity.

Regarding the packaging, I imagine it's very important to keep moisture out. To this end, some might find fault with the locking seal provided on the bags the products are packaged in. They can get fouled by the powder getting in the track during shipping. I simply cleaned the track out by using the thin back end of the cheap metal measuring spoons that I use (from Walmart). I suppose the tip of a keen knife would work also, but at risk of cutting through. The Betatine started to develop a clump or two on top, so I put a silica bag inside to absorb any moisture that I was unintentionally introducing to the bag and haven't found any additional clumps since.

I'm providing this same review for all the components of my blend, as I can't honestly review each of them individually, never having tried any of them in isolation. If I add the Ornithine, I'll provide an update.

5.0 out of 5 stars I use this to help control homocysteine levels

[+] NUTRITIONAL CAFÉ REVIEW w/ video
Trimethylglycine (TMG) provides three methyl groups (hence the “tri”). The body uses methyl groups in the biological process of methylation. The homocysteine cycle uses methylation to convert homocysteines to cysteine using B6 and can be recycled back into methionine using B12, which then is used to create homocysteine. I use this product to support all methylation processes in my body, but I am primarily concerned with making sure my homocysteine cycle is functioning properly, so the homocysteines do not rise to unsafe levels. When that happens, I notice systemic inflammation throughout my body. This can result in my arms and hands becoming less flexible in the morning just after I wake.

I take about 1/4 teaspoon per day. The package directions say, “As a dietary supplement, take 750 mg (rounded 1/4 tsp) to 1500 mg (rounded 1/2 tsp) daily or as directed by a physician.” I try to take it every day, but I do not always remember to take it every day. I would say that I end up taking it about four times a week. I already take a coenzyme form of B6, B12, and Folate, which also supports this process.

I buy the 250 g size because it keeps very well, and that saves me money. I have had good experiences with purchasing products from bulk supplements, and this is no different. I recommend this product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Synthetic Product Made in China
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on October 14, 2017
Size: 8.81 Ounce (Pack of 1)Verified Purchase
I feel a little deceived and discouraged in the way this listing was presented to the consumer. By the wording: "The name Betaine Anhydrous is derived from sugar beets", and so on, including other food sources. If you read that too quickly you are more likely to get the picture that the product is derived from sugar beets or another food source. IN FACT, this product is SYNTHETIC. No where in the entire listing does it state that the product is synthetic. I found that information in the Q&A section when looking to see why the product smelled funny. This leads me to my next concern, if synthetic then the smell of the product should be the same for each package. Why are there so many varied smells that people experience? Mine has a very faint smell but nothing overwhelming. The final thing that bothers me is that no where on the listing does it state that it was processed in China. I found that in the Q&A as well. I don't have a major problem with products coming from China, I just have found that some things have a lesser quality than ones made elsewhere.

I ordered this product because I have the MTHFR C677T Homozygous gene mutation and I heard that this supplement helps with homocysteine levels. When those levels are off your body can develop complications from it such as, migraine headaches, blood clots, and a host of other things. If you have this gene mutation I highly suggest you obtain a copy of the book called The 85% Solution by Dr Dan Purser. https://www.amazon.com/85-Solution-Dan-Purser-MD/dp/0989322963

This supplement has helped to make me feel better in terms of headaches and migraines. It will be interesting to see if it helps additionally with other symptoms I have. I am thinking of getting a non-synthetic version of this to try as an experiment to see if there are any differences.

I am not a chemist so I cannot conclusively verify the exact quality, strength or content of the items received. However, as a layman bodybuilder I can honestly say the materials that I sourced through Bulk Supplements have helped me increase muscle size and strength quickly while minimizing recovery periods.

Issues with muscle recovery have limited my physique for years but I felt uncomfortable using supplements (due totally to my ignorance). Recently I decided to give it a shot. After much reading and evaluation of appropriate materials for my first stack, I felt comfortable enough to proceed. I found after a few weeks that my muscle recovery and growth have clearly improved without adversely affecting my health or using questionable substances. I have also noticed the side benefits of heightened focus and increased memory as well. Again this does not quantify the quality of Bulk Supplements products but it leads me to believe that they provide exactly what they claim. (I feel that a placebo effect would explain the significant decrease in muscle soreness that I expected but would not explain the surprising post workout pump and growth which I did not expect at all).

I know there are pricy packaged pre/post workout cocktails out there but I like measuring out the exact amounts of the materials I want that are appropriate to my size, diet, timing and regimen. It requires thoughtful reading, organization and a willingness to experiment but I believe these results are more rewarding (and the process more interesting and engaging).

I have placed this review on each of the items I have ordered from Bulk Supplements as I will only give my personal opinion on products I have direct experience with.

Disclosure: I did receive a free sample of CLA from Bulk Supplements.

4.0 out of 5 stars One thing I have noticed is far less joint pain and what seems like effortless recovery afterwards
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 28, 2017

Mixes fantastically with water, but so far I cannot tell if I have noticed a difference in my workouts. It is perhaps giving me an energy and endurance boost, but already having caffeine and tyrosine in my stack makes it hard to tell.

I do feel I am bulking up a bit more, but that could just be the result of staying disciplined and consistent. One thing I have noticed is far less joint pain and what seems like effortless recovery afterwards. Once my bag runs out, I will see if these things change, and if so will be purchasing another bag and changing my review to five stars.

I only give it four stars as I did not notice any significant differences from adding this to my stack.

Bottom line: If you want to add betaine to your stack, and are looking for the purest, cheapest solution out there, Bulk Supplements is the way to go. There products are so fantastic that it actually hurts me to take a star away from this product. I only have because I did not notice a PERSONAL difference, but everyone is different! These guys have raised the bar for inexpensive supplements, and I always recommend them to any of my friends interested in bulk supplements to make their own custom stacks. In the long run, the amount of money you save versus buying "preworkout mixes" is INSANE, regardless of the extra time and equipment (scale) involved.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reduce your Homocysteine levels if you have MTHFR
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on November 14, 2016

I purchased this product to help lower my homocysteine levels due to MTHFR.
TMG bypasses the genetic mutation in MTHFR and is able to lower homocysteine directly It is also a Methyl donor, supports this process by donating methyl groups for your newly-functioning methylation pathways to use. It also has other purposes It functions as an anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, energy booster, and more.

"TMG, also known as Betaine or Trimethylglycine, works well in lowering homocysteine safely and effectively" Dr Ben Lynch
Do not take DMG or dimethylglycine. Only take trimethylglycine or TMG.

I wanted something loose, as I tend to make my own supplements, I really like BULK Supplements quality and the price. I combine this with my methyl folate B vitamins. It is alot more effective when taken with B vitamins. My energy levels has increased , before I was very tired, waking up tired and going to bed tired. Since I started adding Methylated B vits, glutathoine & TMG my mental focus has improved.

So Far So Good, I am starting "low & slow" with everything then will increase dosage the following 2 weeks.I take my supplements first thing in the morning so it does not affect my sleep. I take half a tsp in water with my b vits.

Don`t make the mistake I made..... Seal bag properly so that no moisture gets in and store in a cold dark place. I learnt the hard way mine became sticky and clumpy due to moisture

Cost wise this is the best option buy loose and make your own, last alot longer.

I have been suffering from strange symptoms that when i would take a preworkout or anything in general, I would feel suffocated even at the most lowest doses of PWO. I couldnt even get through sets bc I felt this strange excitement feeling in my heart like butterflies and it was so awful. Even standing up I would get them and feel like passing out at times

For some reason I felt inclined taking this product and I am so so so thankful. I feel as of i’m invincible working out and have no issues. Idk if it was problems with my heart but I felt so sick holy sh**. I feel my normal self, and am able to lift heavier weights w/o feeling like passing out. Idk if I got this from taking accutane but this supplement has cured me completely and am so thankful

The only downside is every other night I have energy that keeps me up. Minor insomnia but so far the good side effects have been this calming sensation (I am an extremely nervous person). Makes me feel like i’m on a cloud. Libido has increased (prob from heavier weight lifting). My mood has improved

I used to leave the gym feeling like I was gonna pass out, that fn mess has vanished. I felt so bad having to decline offers as workout buddies from my gym but not anymore. Again very thankful. Whatever is in this keep it please 😂🤘🏽

5.0 out of 5 stars Good Price, Good Energy, Good Brand

I’ve taken TMG before in capsule form, but couldn’t get my dosing high enough without swallowing a handful of capsules. So I bought it from Bulk Supplements, and it has made a big difference.

If you need to take methyl-donors like TMG, you may be surprised by the boost of energy. The first teaspoon of this almost felt like a clean Red Bull experience. It doesn’t feel that way anymore after getting my levels normalized, but I still feel better on it than I do without it. I tend to take it first thing in the morning, along with methyl B-12, DMG, and MSM (which I get from Bulk Supplements), just to start the day all methyl’ed up.

It tastes incredibly sweet. I don’t take time to mix it. I just put some water in my mouth, then throw in a teaspoon of TMG, and swallow. It hardens up when it hits the water in my mouth, so you have to swirl it around a bit before swallowing.

Great price for the doses I need. Definitely feeling the effects. Always very satisfied with this company’s products.
