Product Description

Size: 100 grams (3.5 oz) Powder

Pine bark extract contains proanthocyanidin which is a bioflavonoid, another type of antioxidant. This particular extract is derived from the pinis massoniana tree. Antioxidants are very important to the body because they are able to protect healthy cells from being damaged by what is known as free radicals. These are molecules that are created during the natural metabolic process which see to harm healthy cells. There are many antioxidants out there that perform the same actions as pine bark extract with varying degrees of success. Some of this extractÆs peers include vitamins A, C, and E as well as selenium. However, the OPCs (oligomeric proanthocyanodins, the scientific name for the specific type of antioxidants found in pine bark) present in pine bark extract are some of the most potent forms of antioxidants that can be found in nature.

After my last purchase, I was invited to choose and review this free package of BulkSupplements Pure Pine Bark Extract Powder (100 grams).

I have decided to examine every area of improvement that this pine bark extract (PBE) is supposed to provide and see if it is really doing anything for me.

1. ADHD: People have said that instead of taking one of the methylphenidates, such as Ritalin or Adderall, which are hardcore "class II" narcotics like cocaine or amphetamine, individuals should consider taking a natural alternative such as PBE. According to clinical trials recorded on MEDLINE, PBE has demonstrated reduced oxidative stress, improved cognitive and mental performance, and increased attention in students w/ADHD.

I did not have attention problems until after the seventh grade, but I did graduate from college at the age of 32 (BSEE). I notice that a double dose, 500 mg, of PBE does produce a more fevered style of concentration. I can accomplish much more, especially the unpleasant tasks, and I happily take this amount when I have to get a lot done. Backing off to the normal dose of 250 mg recommended by BulkSupplements, I don't feel fevered or different, but I am still getting more done these days. Sometimes I don't take any supplements at all (for several days), and here I notice how great it feels to lay around in bed, and it is definitely different than when I take a normal dose of PBE.

2. Younger Looking Skin: According to MEDLINE, a nutrient mix consisting of PBE, vitamin C, E, alpha lipoic acid, zinc, selenium, amino acids, and blueberry extract significantly improves and lightens normal skin, photo-aged skin, age spots, melasma, UV damage, as well as ameliorating inflammatory skin disorders and visible signs of aging.

This Pine Bark Extract fully meets my expectations. It comes in a well sealed protective bag (shown), the powder is very fine and easy to mix with other things, and the effects it has on my body are very good.

1. I ordered the 100g bag, the bag is resealable. I'm very happy to find Pine Bark Extract (PBE) affordable enough for me to buy. I have taken Pycnogenol in capsule form and have experienced varied results. However, I take a 1/4 teaspoon of this powdered PBE in the early morning (between 5:30 and 6:30) and I feel the results well into the late afternoon during a full day of studying and moving about.
I would like to note that 1/4 teaspoon(751mg) of powdered PBE is equal to about 7-8 100mg capsules. If you take 7-8 capsules a day you will have run through a bottle of 300 in about 43-48 days respectively. An excellent deal for a bottle of 300 100mg capsules runs for about $20 on as a special. Total amount of grams in a 300 count bottle of 100mg capsules is 30,000mg or 30 grams priced at about $20 (rare deal for PBE as of this posting).
Compare this to 100 grams @ $13.96! That's 3.33 times the amount for about 73% of the price!
What that means is that it lasts more than 3 times as long and you spend less money.

2. Enough of the math. My overall all quality of life has improved by taking Pine Bark Extract in general. In particular my life has been improved in that my energy lasts much longer and my focus has improved significantly since I began taking 1/4 teaspoon every morning in a spoon full of yogurt. I have since decreased my daily intake of PBE to about 1/8 because my body no longer needs that large of an amount unless preparing for an extraordinary day.

3. Using this every day is very easy to do.

I've been using Pycnogenol for a while now. I've used the Healthy Origins brand: a small capsule filed with dark orange powder. I'd on occasion put it straight on my tongue and I loved the tart taste that. It would seem to me, it would start getting absorbed right away! I'd also open a capsule and add it to my coffee.

As much as I love Pycnogenol (and the above-mentioned brand selling it; there are always differences in fillers!), Pycnogenol is expensive. I've been thinking of switching for a while. I've seen some clinical studies abstracts on pine bark extracts made from pine bark other than French maritime pine bark, and I thought it should be a fine substitute (for those who are new to the subject, there are several types of pines. Pycnogenol is made of one particular type of pine growing in France, the French maritime pine).

I finally got this powder, and I'm very satisfied with a quality. The color is warm brown as opposed to reddish/orangish of Pycnogenol that I've taken so far, so one might suspect there may be differences in chemical makeup. Nevertheless, the taste is very similar, and right now I crave this powder just as I used to crave my Pycnogenol fix. I know some people don't like the taste, I just love it :). I add it to coffee for aroma. It smells like pine forest to me :).

The powder is very finely ground, dissolves in my coffee perfectly. I don't have anything else but my impressions to claim it does something good to my body, but I crave it every day. It is my impression it's pure as well, and I trust Bulk Supplements as far as purity testing anyway.
