The story is about Steve Watson, the son of two magicians, Mike and Nora. Mike and Nora Watson were very famous in their day, playing large venues and hosting a variety show on TV. Their son Steve is also a magician, but in a different style - smaller, more spontaneous. Mike and Nora visit Steve and ask him to join them for one last big show in Berlin, so they can go out with a bang (and make a few bucks). Mike explains that they need Steve because Nora is getting a little forgetful and they think having Steve in the act will help smooth things out. So Steve agrees and he and his team fly to Berlin to be part of the show.
In the meantime, there is a "secret agent" assassin on the loose in the city. Several killings take place and they're linked to the magic show. The plot moves quickly through the streets of Berlin, there are car chases, snipers and secret service agents from three different countries all in the mix. The plot twists are interesting, unpredictable and interspersed with details of the magic show that the Watsons are putting together.
The author does a very good job defining his characters and creating an atmosphere - similar to Dick Francis. He creates interesting secondary characters (like Dana and Inspektor Eberhardt), and the dialog is very realistic. The inclusion of magic in the story is smooth and compelling and his knowledge of the streets of Berlin quite remarkable.
"Bullet Catch" is self-published and is the first novel (as far as I know) written by Scott Jenkins. I read a couple of books a week so I get a lot of self-published books free or for $0.99 through my Kindle (it's just too expensive to pay $7 - 8 per book). "Bullet Catch" is several notches above the vast majority of self-published books. The writing, editing and presentation are just like a regular book offered by one of the big publishers. The character development and story-telling are also excellent, not like a first attempt at all. The author writes with a maturity that is most becoming.
I can highly recommend this book.
