Bullet is a guitar tour de force riding on the fierce rhythmic foundation of bassist Jimmy Haslip and drummer Gary Novak.
Delivering a set of rootsy blues rock crossed with hypnotic vocal tunes, the band draws on the unique guitar interplay between guitar giants Robben Ford and Michael Landau who inspire each other to new personal bests.

Michael Landau is less experimental in his guitar work than when I saw the band live in Sydney a year ago. The quality of his playing however, and Ford's playing, is first rate, and even where the album loses momentum with the slow numbers like Nazareth, there is always impeccable playing.
There is an interesting juxtaposition of hard rock and Allmanesque middle of the roaders like "people like me" which suggests that the band are very relaxed about mixing up genres. I am of the view that the harder stuff like the title track better represents the energy this band fulfills live, but I don't mean in any way to denigrate the soulful blues on this album because Ford has made his reputation on the back of such subtle musicianship.
Recommended without hesitation, especially for those that loved the first album.

Interesting tunes, smokin' guitar tones, and excellent mixing. Great driving music and a fountain of cool blues licks for musicians to crib from. A strong album all around!Published on November 8, 2012 by Whifflaw
