This album is not as compelling as the Compass Point sessions, and more influenced by the electronically inclined C&C music factory sound,it has a very dated early 90's techno sound. It's very typical of R&B of the late 80's and early 90's...drum machines galore, little if any emphasis on live musicianship, over the top production and even featuring the "house" rapper for C&C music Factory Freedom Wilson as the MC. The C&C music factory were producers/songwriters David Cole&Robert Cliville's who's sound sold millions of records in the early 90's,Grace Jones sound was so diverse that it could be reproduced by any producer, however the C&C production sound was so predictable that on this record the tracks lack the soul that her Island Records material defined. The songs either written or co written by Grace Jones are great and her vocals are superb as always,a few bonus tracks are featured on this remastered edition, otherwise if you're looking for the "best" of Grace Jones checkout her collaborations with Sly&Robbie as musical directors with Chris Blackwell as producer while at his Island Records Compass point studios era.

Grace Jones present's A Bulletproof Heart, a love story, a drama, tragedy, or a comedy it's definately a mix of sounds. Her vocals are strong, passionate, even too intense for some of the music presented here. the track Kicked Around is good, coulda been better with a hard rock sound to match her kickass vocals. A few of the tracks simply don't fit, compared to the steller production of other tracks. "love on top of love" is one of the standout tracks with it's newjack beats. "bulletproofhear" is a stomping track that could easily be remade,by "Marilynmanson"it possibly influenced his track "beautifulpeople". This recod is simply grace defying be pigeon holed into dance diva. With her own nuwave, disco, raga, broadway stylings. recomended tracks..

Not my favorite from Grace, but it is still a GREAT effort. I don't go to this CD over and over as I do with some of her others, but I am glad I have it in my collection!

How can you not love an LP with a cover like that.

The album is overall very poor. There's way too much reverb which make the songs sound very old and really dated. I actually bought this album because of Amado Mio, which is a quality song. This album falls far from Warm Leatherette and Nightclubbing. Amado Mio, Driving Satisfaction, and Bulletproof Heart are worth considering. I'm hopeful that her new album is better.

I started buying music by Grace Jones that I missed in the past. This was my favorite of her previous works.

Sound quality OK but vocals lack bite and aggression
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 28, 2020Verified Purchase
This is the 1989 recording, some parts of which are excellent. In particular the bass range is very good. Sadly it is the vocal recording that lets this album down. Grace Jones voice lacks aggression on many tracks and indeed is just not “in your face”.
This is not a bad recording just a little disappointing. It is almost as if the recording is trying a little too hard to please and failing.
I have not set out to write reviews of the music content as “beauty is in the ears of the listener”. These reviews are about the quality (or not) of the recorded sound. To read about how the reviews are done please see my profile.
• Clarity – OK but vocals seem slightly “fuzzy”
• Channel separation – Very good
• Channel balance – Very good, dynamic bounces between channels
• Sound Stage – Very good wide and broad
• Distortion – Non audible
• Compression – Limited but not overly intrusive
• Atmosphere – Not bad, a reasonably atmospheric recording
• Bass – low frequencies – Drum sounds are excellent, very tight and punchy. Bass guitar rumbles away in the basement
• Treble – high frequencies – OK but mid range is a little “soft”
• Vocals – Strangely the weakest aspect of this recording in that Grace Jones voice seems to be mixed back too far
As a general rule of thumb recordings from the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s are nearly always better on the original vinyl. Remasters often fail to please as it’s just not possible to make a silk purse from a sows ear, i.e. the original recording lacks the necessary detail to be processed digitally and show an audible improvement. Indeed such processing can make the sound worse.
Modern recordings which have been processed digitally from start to finish can be as good as vinyl. CD’s are often unfairly criticised for being poor quality. This is not the case, it is the original recording or the process which is to blame. Modern “remasters” can both enhance and degrade a recording. The statement GIGO (Garbage In Garbage Out) is the limiting factor. Ignore this at your cost.

My second favourite GJ album.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 12, 2014Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this album having recently heard it for the first time. Ten out of twelve tracks are great, "Crack Attack" is my favourite, the title track is probably the weakest. "Amado Mio" is very unusual (not unpleasantly so) with a Latin flavour - the song doesn't flow in the way one expects it to. I was put off buying this CD at first because of negative reviews re the production but it stands up well to my ears. I own several GJ albums, "Bulletproof Heart" is possibly my second favourite (after "Portfolio" and just ahead of "Inside Story").

Excellent Album by one of the Greatest Female Vocalists Of All Time!

Every track on this album I adore it dates back to 1989, very difficult to buy, so few of them at a reasonable price! If you get an opportunity, buy it, this album is rare, and like all of Grace'es absolutely Brilliant, she puts everything into what she does, on stage and in the Studio! Fantastic Style Icon too!
