Nik Morton has a winner here. I enjoyed following U. S. Marshall Cash Laramie through this journey as he does what he can to protect a woman running for mayor against the sleezy incumbent. Full of twists and turns, this western kept me reading until the last page. There a few shockers in there, so hold on to your gun belt, it's gonna be a thrilling ride.

Kudos to Mr. Morton, for a tale well spun.

Violent--maybe too violent. Not that the 1880's were not violent. Could definitely tell the author was a male. Did like the overall characters, and plot was realistic, to a point. Wished for a more joyous ending. Would read this author again, think he has great storytelling ability. /Stephanie

A short but entertaining book in the genre of the old west as the stories tell it. The characters are generally true to form. Women getting the vote and running for mayor. All this happening in once liberal Wyoming. Women got the right to vote there before any other state...a historical fact. Enjoyable read that has a lot of killing..some quasi-legal!

This is a book you will love but more than a few times it will tare your heart out. It was how the West was won with brave men & women & their heartbreak. All in the name of ous becoming the United States. The hero's who started it all.

When you read a book your best hope is that the book will be interesting enough to finish, not only did I finish but this story was the best I have read lately. The characters were very well developed along with the story line. Cash Laramie was now a US Marshall but as a young man he protected a young widow from losing her life and her ranch, now sixteen years later he is again at her aid. Only this time Esther Tolliver is running for mayor against the very corrupt incumbent. The story line flows beautifully and historically from page one to the very explosive ending, that you will have trouble turning the pages fast enough. The combination of action and emotions run from gun fighting, burning buildings, corruption, sex, love, anger, hatred, disgust, death and deep, deep loss but keep you so engrossed to the very end. And let me tell you I never saw this ending in my wildest imagination. Keep your tissues handy because you will need them but don't miss out on an excellent western read.

Although I'm not new at reading westerns I am a first time reader of Nik Morton's and I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed every word! Another thing I really appreciated was, I don't think I read one curse word! No matter what the book or the story is about, it doesn't make it better to have all those curse words! It takes a pretty talented writer to take a character(s) that is not of his own making, and write a wonderful story as if they were. And Nik Moreton is that author! Thank you Sir, for a wonderful story. I plan on checking out his other westerns. I highly recommend this book!

Cash Laramie is sent to protect a widow who is also a candidate for mayor in the sort of town where one guy with all the money and power keeps everyone else under his thumb. After her husband is murdered while running for mayor, Mrs. Tolliver runs in his stead, and is also threatened. True to the Beat to A Pulp brand, there is lots of violence, and many bad guys (not all of them male) get their comeuppance. I would like to have seen a little more character development, particularly of the two main characters, but it is a fast moving, easy to read story that will give a few hours diversion. If you are not already familiar with the main characters, don't worry, all the back story you need is included in this book, but you may want to check out the two volumes of short stories by Edward Grainger featuring US Marshals Cash Laramie and Gideon Miles as well.

NM has written a western with twists and turns that make some mysteries seem tame. He has lassoed a bucking bronc and the storyline leads you in different directions until the end. This, definitely, is an excellent read for the genre..... ER
