Roper has the background of being in the Civil War and having worked for Allan Pinkerton, but has now struck out on his own as a Private Investigater working out of Denver.
Not surprising, this novel is more of a Detective or Mystery novel than a Western.Randisi brings excellent writing skills ,and it is well written, but as one who loves Westerns and not Mystery or Detective novels;I was disappointed.I may read another Roper nove; but if it is similar to this one,and I suspect it will be,since after all,Roper is a Private Eye,and not a Gunsmith, Deputy Marshal ,or a Gunfighter of the Old West style;I'll probably pass up this series.
