Unlike Mel Brooks, who writes the songs for his “musical” films and their Broadway interpretations, Woody Allen, at least in the last two decades, has used old standards or jazz classics (he loves Gershwin) in his films. So when it was time to make a Broadway version of his comedy (not musical comedy; just comedy), he didn’t go out and hire Alan Menken, Mark Shaiman or even Seth MacFarlane (thank goodness!) but chose the great jazz and blues songs of the 1920s – a time where the action takes place.

So, like others have said here, these are reinterpretations of songs many folks know, with some hidden “gems” that only fans of that period will know. Surely folks know the music to “Tiger Rag”, but many haven’t heard the lyrics. And others like “Up A Lazy River”, “I’m Sitting On Top of The World” and “She’s Funny That Way” are standards. But I’m willing to bet that most folks who pack the theater night after night are not familiar with fun stuff like “Here Comes The Hot Tamale Man” and the definitely more sensuous “The Hot Dog Song” (I’d print the double-entendre lyrics here but they just might be to suggestive). That last number Helene Yorke as Olive, is near-perfect burlesque. Susan Stroman (who did similar choreography and direction for Brook’ “The Producers” returns to give the audience (both in the theatre and on the CD) some great tap dancing.

The CD packs an Overture plus 21 songs into 55 minutes of fun. It certainly helps if you have seen the show, though there is a synopsis – as well as lyrics – in the 24 page booklet enclosed (though you might want a magnifying glass handy – especially on page 23, where the composers of those 21 songs are given their credit – in such miniscule typeface as to fill only a bit more than an inch of vertical space.

Bullets Over Broadway is a fun musical with a great cast and terrific orchestrations. Some of Broadways best are heard here including Marin Maizzie, who has a much different role than she normal has, and Karen Ziemba, a real Broadway pro.

The show is fast-paced and full of wonderful music from the past, which fits into the play really well. However, it also reminds me of several successful Broadway musicals of the past such as Guys and Dolls (about gamblers--not mobsters) and Tenderloin (again not mobsters) that are a notch above this show.

Helene Yorke as Olive is the brash blonde; I have a feeling that seeing her is probably better than just hearing her. She is very Vivian Blaine in the part, However, Vivian Blaine was perfection in Guys and Dolls. Yorke overdoes it a bit (again she's probably wonderful on stage). Zach Braff does nicely and Marin Maizzie is once again a knockout.

The CD is well made; the lyrics are in the booklet. The show is fun.

Bullets Over Broadway, a musical based on Woody Allen’s non-musical gangster film of 1994. Loved it! Terrific razzmatazz ‘20s-style jazz age music with a great orchestra. This is a show I’d go see, even with Broadway’s hugely inflated ticket prices. (With luck they’ll remake the movie now, as happened with The Producers.) Instead of writing an original score, the musical relies on actual songs from the era, with just enough additional lyrics added to integrate them smoothly into the plot and characters.

Because it’s basically a musical comedy with gangsters, there’s a temptation to compare it with Guys and Dolls, but Damon Runyon’s gangsters were basically gamblers (“I got the horse right here/His name is Paul Revere...”) and harmless, loveable rogues. Woody Allen’s gangsters are mobbed-up and kill people (when a hit man is taking his latest victim to dump in the river, he sings “Up a Lazy River”!). Think of it as 42nd Street meets The Godfather. The CD works great as a collection of breezy vintage songs that made me smile.

This musical may lack a truly original score, but the songs they chose to tell the story fit them perfectly. It helps to know the movie if you haven't seen the show, but if you do, this is a very, very enjoyable album. The cast is terrific at embodying the very funny characters. I kind of rank it alongside the cast recordings for The Producers, Spamelot, and The Drowsy Chaperon as being pure fun to listen to.

Don't think you're going to sit in a chair and listen to this CD: you'll want to get up and tap to the tap dancing numbers and dance around to the others. No new songs in Bullets Over Broadway but they're different from the way you've heard them before. Even if you haven't seen the show or even the original movie, you'll have fun with this recording.

Great show! Saw it in NYC last summer.
Great cast recording!
Granted it wasn't an "original score," but who cares. It didn't get nominated for hardly any Tonys anyway, so time to move on.
Anyone who knows Woody knows that this is what he does in his movies anyway.
He uses standards to accentuate the time period and the stories involved in his movies.
And it worked for this show, making it a thoroughly entertaining evening in the theater.
For those who have issues with the music being unoriginal, fuggedaboutit……it didn't get nominated for best musical so move on. Don't worry about it.
Accept it for what it is, a great show with some great music and awesome performances.
