When her archnemesis dares to show his face one Saturday morning, declaring he is moving there too, she vows to make his life a misery. The town isn’t big enough for the both of them and besides . . .
She was here first.
Cal has been a thorn in her side since high school. He might have bullied her back then, but she’s not a modest teenager anymore and has learned a few plays of her own. If all goes to plan, she’ll run the former pro quarterback out of town within a month.
There’s only one problem. Cal has the same plan. He wants Calamity bad enough to pull out all the stops. And after one kiss, she realizes that he doesn’t play fair.

Talk about a tension filled enemies to lover’s romance! The jabs, the snide comments, if these two weren’t pushing each other’s buttons they were fighting off the sexual chemistry between them! And believe me, there was no forgive and forget for Cal and Nellie, old hurts from high school remained between them years later, I felt sympathy for both their sides, but Nellie’s jabs as an adult hurt just a little more. Cal and his lonely heart really made me want to hug him, every “Tell me what you hate about me” broke my heart. So, while he may have seemed to have it all after retiring from football, he was lost and kept his heart closed off and I ached for Nellie to realize all his jabs were to protect himself from more heartache, not to hurt her.
“Taunting her was like trash-talking the best lineman on a fourth-down conversion attempt. Either I’d find a way to get the ball down field, or I’d get my butt sacked. Regardless, the game was a rush.”
Cal put on this tough guy persona, easier to come off as the jerk than to let people see his tender heart below, a great defense mechanism to keep Nellie at arm’s length. But with the revelations from Nellie’s freshman year diary, all the hate filled moments looked different, his eyes were opened to how he truly hurt her back then, even if his intentions were to protect her. I admired Nellie’s strength to persevere despite her insecurities, she grew up a lot over the years but her hatred for Cal remained. Nellie just wanted to fit in and that is something we can all relate to. I cheered once they let their walls drop, seeing that they both were a little lonely and fit perfect together, they weren’t as different after all. And the hate sex, HOT DANG, these two were fire together! Absolutely loving this series!
“Life’s not about what most people think. Life’s about finding the right people. The ones who will take you at your worst, so you can give them your best.”
Cal and Nellie not only have friends in common, who they try not to drag into their drama, but they have a history. And their history has history. I honestly didn’t know who to love and who to hate, but then I figured they had the hate side more than covered between the two of them, and really, it's impossible not to love them. But you know what they say about a strong feeling like hate . . .
As Nash's stories always do, this one ruined me in the best of ways. The more that was revealed about these characters and the more I saw their complexities and vulnerabilities, the more they absconded with my heart. I read this straight through in one sitting because I absolutely had to know how everything worked out, and I had to know now!
With complicated, endearing characters and a heartfelt, angsty story, you'll find your emotions tumbled and tossed and love every second of it. It's sweet, poignant, and a little heart breaking, with flashes of humor and blazes of steam, making it a charming, euphoric, mesmerizing read that you absolutely won’t want to miss!
I fell in love with these two. And on so many levels I connected with and empathized with Nellie. I experienced a lot of the same things she went through in high school that we learn about in flashback memories and my heart just hurt for her so much. Unlike when they were in high school, Nellie now “fights back” with the comments and innuendos that Cal makes every time they see each other.
Of course what’s underlying all their bickering is the very palpable chemistry bubbling between them and when they give in… holy moly they’re ON FIRE!!! Throughout this book, little changes are being made by each of them and seeing how they come to understand who they are today and what’s hidden underneath the public persona had me glued to my kindle. I loved how their frenemie relationship switched to a true friendship and ultimately love.
Nellie truly shows Cal that it’s okay to be vulnerable and express love which is something he’s never experienced before. We learn so much about why Cal is the way he is and how his love for this woman only makes him a better man. Along the way to their HEA there are so many laugh out loud moments thanks in part to Cal’s neighbor Harry, but also passion and discovery which just makes this book a fabulous read!!

Cal and Nellie were friends once upon a time, though they were only kids and an unlikely pair, there was something that drew them together, until one day a misunderstanding changed that and battle lines were drawn. Nellie was the scholarship kid and Cal was the football star who made her life a misery.
Years later, both having the same best friend, they end up back in the same small town, but this time Nellie isn’t going to hide, she’s worked to hard and earned her place in Calamity, she’s not going to let Cal run her away, this town isn’t big enough for them both and Nellie decides the only solution is for Cal to go. One thing she didn’t count on though, is the undeniable attraction between them and the pesky problem that they can’t keep their hands off each other!
I loved Nellie and Cal’s story, it was angsty, it was heartfelt and it was real. At times Nellie became the bully she had accused Cal of being, but in the end they each made mistakes which ended up bringing them closer. This wasn’t your typical romance, and I think that’s what made it so special, there were ups and downs but in the end, they finally got the HEA they were destined to.
A fantastic read, great supporting characters and more questions leading to hopefully more stories to come!

This book was just an amazing heartfelt read. My heart hurt for Cal. He cut such a lonely figure. For all he was Mr Popular in school, he’d spent his life trying so hard to be the opposite of his father that everyone had the wrong impression of who he truly was and only saw his bad boy of football persona. He didn’t let anyone close enough to see the real Cal beneath all the bravado. He only had one true friend and had to share him with Nellie. Nellie had my sympathies to start with but the more I read I just thought she had become a bigger bully than Cal ever was. In her adulthood she’d turned into one of the mean girls who’d made her life a misery. Her only saving Grace was her regret at causing him pain
Every time I read a Willa Nash book I just think right she can’t beat this one but The Bully takes this to a whole new level. I really can’t see how she can possibly top this book but I also can’t wait to see her try and read what happens next in Calamity, Montana

All they do is rile each other up and argue, and then (as they got older) secretly hook up for a one night stand. Over and over. For four years.
So when Cal accidentally comes across a box of Nellie’s old diaries, and not-at-all-accidentally takes one home with him, he’s horrified to see just how much his actions in high school affected her.
Cal is such a good man but hates showing it, which is why he’s labelled a jerk more often than not by those who don’t really know him. And since he never really lets anyone in, only a select few know how truly wonderful and generous he is. Grumpy but soft and vulnerable inside.
Nellie can’t deal with the idea that Cal is moving to her new town and so comes up with a plan to run him off. Except every time she’s mean to him, she feels such an immense guilt because she’s such a kind soul in reality.
I love how Cal and Nellie are basically the only ones who don’t realise that they don’t actually hate each other, even though no one verbalises it. Except for Harry of course. I want to be her when I grow up.
The chapters vary between his and her POV, as well as some of her diary entries. It’s fascinating to see how differently Cal remembers the events that Nellie had written about, because for certain occasions he actually had good reasons for what he did. Granted his execution wasn’t always well thought out but he was a teenage boy so…I don’t think tactics were high on his agenda then.
Cal’s vulnerability and fear of rejection just squished my little heart so much! Yes, Nellie had the fear of rejection too, and my heart broke for her at the BBQ, but Cal made me want to wrap him up and protect him from the big bad world.

The actual storyline was pretty good but heck it got boring in places. It was like rinse and repeat. Then eventually everything was shoved in a quick 5 minute epilogue which was less than satisfying. I can't even download the bonus chapter sadly.
Never mind I'll still try the Brawl.
