And then there are all the little details that draw you into this world. Some that will make you wince, and some that might make you ill. Kidwell doesn't hold back on the bloody details.
But let's get back to the monsters. I guarantee you've never seen anything like them. Like the classic Frankenstein's monster, they are creatures of torment and rage.
If you've read the original Bump graphic novel and you dare to go deeper into Kidwell's "Ghost Story with Teeth," you won't be disappointed. There are many things left to learn as Kidwell has delved deeper into his mean little story and created something unique. A ghost story that is nothing like you imagined it would be. It's darker, mean, and unapologetically brutal.
I loved it.
I am really glad that I picked this one up. For a debut novel, this is really well written. It's an edge of your seat gore fest with a great cast of characters. I highly recommend this one to any horror fan!
I haven't read a really good scary novel in a long time. They are kind of like a good scary movie.....promise a lot but in the end don't really deliver. This, however, is NOT the case with BUMP! The ending left me wanting more.....more....MORE!
Mark Kidwell has a knack for spinning a tale that really makes you want to check under your bed and in the closets for those things that haunt your dreams. Don't forget to take along your double-barrel shotgun and something that throws fire! This book will definitely get you all riled up!
Mark is a true artist when it comes to painting pictures with words. They say a photo is worth 1000 words but you haven't read BUMP yet! Mark's ability to draw you into the story and make you actually feel the terror is a true gift.
His characters make you love them and want them to survive (with the exception of the Dills). The way in which these characters interact and deal with each other gives you every reason to either love them or want to reach into the book and slap some nonsense into them. His character formations and backstories give you a true sense of who each character is.
The Dills give you the creeps from the beginning of the story. You just KNOW there is something fundamentally wrong with them. Sheriff Lundy, he's the guy who sets the stage for the Dills to come back and HAUNT your dreams!Read more ›
Kidwell approaches the blank page like a hunter. He knows what he's after, and packs accordingly. I was already a fan of his Image Comics horror hit, '68, but BUMP struck closer to home. As a former resident of Richmond, KY (Mark's current home), BUMP was an easy sell. I could picture those desolate back roads, weed-choked lanes, and dilapidated homes with ease. I could see the sun's glint on the Sheriff's badge, I could hear the screams within the Dill home, and practically smell the blood. Kidwell, an already gifted comic illustrator and writer, has a knack for wholly descriptive writing, but leaves just enough room in BUMP for you to hang yourself with. Filled with realistic southern characters, locations, and dialogue, Kidwell knocks it out of the park with this novel.
If you're a fan of original and emotionally taxing horror, BUMP is required reading.
