About the Author

Mark Kidwell is the author/illustrator of dozens of comic books and graphic novels. Primarily working in the horror genre, Mark has created such popular series as Bump, Frank Frazetta's Dark Kingdom (with Tim Vigil and Jay Fotos) and the ongoing Vietnam/Zombie epic, '68. In addition to his graphic work, Mark has designed creature special effects for such industry luminaries as Robert Kurtzman (KNB and Precinct 13 Entertainment), penned original screenplays and provided illustration for numerous fantasy gaming books. The expansion of Bump from comic book mini-series to full prose novel is his first literary release. He is currently hard at work on more.

Mark Kidwell's debut novel takes the tired old ghost story and turns it on its ear. Fast paced, full of gore, and fiendishly creepy-Bump is a dark little morality tale that takes no prisoners. I really enjoyed Kidwell's blood soaked, Southern Gothic world full of freaks, monsters, and humans who could be both.

And then there are all the little details that draw you into this world. Some that will make you wince, and some that might make you ill. Kidwell doesn't hold back on the bloody details.

But let's get back to the monsters. I guarantee you've never seen anything like them. Like the classic Frankenstein's monster, they are creatures of torment and rage.

If you've read the original Bump graphic novel and you dare to go deeper into Kidwell's "Ghost Story with Teeth," you won't be disappointed. There are many things left to learn as Kidwell has delved deeper into his mean little story and created something unique. A ghost story that is nothing like you imagined it would be. It's darker, mean, and unapologetically brutal.

I loved it.

Let me get my rolaids, a nerve pill, and my 9mm handy before I recap. This book was freaking awesome!!!! I love the horror genre, and by far BUMP was one of the best I've ever read. Kidwell has a true gift for imagery, some scenes so vivid and strong in my head, I turned the page literally "smelling" the scene. Thank you for making me check my doors at night twice, Mark Kidwell. Okay, maybe it was three times. Read BUMP, people. So totally worth the chills!

Having read two of Mark Kidwell's shorter stories, and loving them both, I decided to give his full length novel, "Bump", a read.

I am really glad that I picked this one up. For a debut novel, this is really well written. It's an edge of your seat gore fest with a great cast of characters. I highly recommend this one to any horror fan!

I am so excited to tell you about a book I have recently been able to review. (I was given a copy of BUMP to review honestly). BUMP by Mark Kidwell. This isn't your everyday book.....it is so much more. If you like books that make your pulse race, give Mr. King's novels a run for his money in the creepy department, then BUMP is for you!

I haven't read a really good scary novel in a long time. They are kind of like a good scary movie.....promise a lot but in the end don't really deliver. This, however, is NOT the case with BUMP! The ending left me wanting more.....more....MORE!

Mark Kidwell has a knack for spinning a tale that really makes you want to check under your bed and in the closets for those things that haunt your dreams. Don't forget to take along your double-barrel shotgun and something that throws fire! This book will definitely get you all riled up!

Mark is a true artist when it comes to painting pictures with words. They say a photo is worth 1000 words but you haven't read BUMP yet! Mark's ability to draw you into the story and make you actually feel the terror is a true gift.

His characters make you love them and want them to survive (with the exception of the Dills). The way in which these characters interact and deal with each other gives you every reason to either love them or want to reach into the book and slap some nonsense into them. His character formations and backstories give you a true sense of who each character is.

The Dills give you the creeps from the beginning of the story. You just KNOW there is something fundamentally wrong with them. Sheriff Lundy, he's the guy who sets the stage for the Dills to come back and HAUNT your dreams!

Like an idiot, I read the bulk of BUMP in bed - a place where my own imagination is my worst enemy. Tack on 90 minutes of Bump per night and Mark Kidwell's descriptive characters were setting literary bear traps in my head. Thanks, Mark. As a lifelong horror fanatic, I'm always intrigued when I hear something like "extreme horror". I'm not sure I could describe BUMP in more accurate detail.

Kidwell approaches the blank page like a hunter. He knows what he's after, and packs accordingly. I was already a fan of his Image Comics horror hit, '68, but BUMP struck closer to home. As a former resident of Richmond, KY (Mark's current home), BUMP was an easy sell. I could picture those desolate back roads, weed-choked lanes, and dilapidated homes with ease. I could see the sun's glint on the Sheriff's badge, I could hear the screams within the Dill home, and practically smell the blood. Kidwell, an already gifted comic illustrator and writer, has a knack for wholly descriptive writing, but leaves just enough room in BUMP for you to hang yourself with. Filled with realistic southern characters, locations, and dialogue, Kidwell knocks it out of the park with this novel.

If you're a fan of original and emotionally taxing horror, BUMP is required reading.
