Editorial Reviews

Review

"The Bunco Club is not just a book - it's an experience." Portland Book Review

"In the tradition of celebrations of female friendships like Steel Magnolias, Karen DeWitt's The Bunco Club lets us into the world of eight good friends. DeWitt juggles the eight lives well. The challenges faced by the characters vary enough to continually renew the reader's interest. The author ups the cozy factor by including recipes from the various menus at the back of the book. Karen DeWitt paints a warm, entertaining picture of eight women who drive each other crazy while still helping each other through life." --Windy City Reviews

"The Bunco Club is a powerful testament to the strength and importance of friendships. The characters are real, and the emotions are powerful. The stories themselves are beautiful, encompassing all aspects of life. This charming book is just all-around lovely."  --San Francisco Book Reviews

About the Author

Karen DeWitt is a member of a Bunco Club that has been together for more than twenty years. She also holds an MFA in studio art from Southern Illinois University and has attended workshops at the renowned Iowa Summer Writing Festival. Karen’s career as a professional artist became challenged several years ago when Multiple Sclerosis claimed the fine motor skills of her right hand. Struggling to stay creative, she trained her left-hand so she could continue to produce art, while at the same time beginning work on THE BUNCO CLUB. “I’ve always loved to write, so when one door closed, I jumped at the chance to open a new one.”

I just finished reading "The Bunco Club". The author, Karen DeWitt, did a wonderful job weaving the lives of eight women into a story that focuses on their Bunco Club. As a person who played Bunco for many years until I was too ill to continue, I know what a joy it is to get together once a month with a group of wonderful women who both support you and laugh with you.

I look forward to the possibility of a sequel. I need to know what happens next in the lives of these eight women.

I haven't read a book in quite some time and I read this one in a few days. I loved everything about it. I have never played bunco but am an avid quilter so the characters were able to be enhanced with the stories about their quilting styles and getting to go with them to quilt camp was an added treat. I can't wait for the next one in the series - yes Karen, please write a series!!

Karen DeWitt was in Valparaiso for a quilt show held at the fairgrounds convention center. I picked up a bookmark telling about her book and later brought it for my Kindle. I am almost finished reading this gift to women and will soon start her second creation. She has captured friendships and all the facets that run through the threads of women's souls. Good writing from the heart, I suggest you put this on your must read list.

I enjoyed the first book in this series and intend on reading the others. I like the characters and enjoy the way we "get to know them" over the course of reading the book. It probably helps that I am a quilter and love to play games like bunco and cards.

I really liked the way the writer formatted the story. Every time she changed the perspective from a different member of the club. I have never played bunco, but it sounds like fun. I understand the laughter and fun because it is similar to my knitting group. I would recommend this to anyone interested in cozies and fun.

I loved this book. I am a Bunco player and a Quilter. The characters are easily described which makes for a very diverse group of ladies as the author takes each through their plans to hostess the Bunco game. I have recommended this book as a great read to my Bunco and Quilt Sisters. Fun time with this book

I received The Bunco Club as a gift last week. I started it, with the intention of reading a chapter a night, as it is a busy time for me. Good intentions aside, I could not put this story down. I read the entire book, cover to cover! These women drew me in. I do not quilt or play bunco, but the stories of friendship and family were the universal connection for me. I hit the "Mayflower" chapter, and I knew I was hooked! As if that wasn't bad enough, I've already tried three of the recipes from the back of the book. I am ordering copies for my mom and sisters for a summer kick off. We have been missing Maeve Binchy, and this is just the wonderful fresh voice we needed. Crossing my fingers for a sequel! The Bunco Club

As a sequel to the Quilters of the Bunco Club, I eagerly read this book to "finish the story" I started in the first book. I enjoyed both of them, and if the writer publishes a third in the series, I will read it too.
