Top customer reviews
Nice product but not a huge value so gets a 4 (pretty darn good) vice 5 (wow!) star rating. Warranty: 30 day return to original retailer, and 5 year repair/replacement warranty from Olight Technology Co. Shenzhen, China not sure how practical that would/will be. There is a USA Olight site at http://www.olightusa.com but it was down for maintenance at the time of this review.
The vertical (standing) USB connector powered magnetic charging stand (750 mA rate) with USB pass through is convenient/effective and does not require battery removal. Charging stand LED glows red when flashlight in in position and turns green when charging is complete.
Not having the typical end-cap on-off switch (has a magnetic charging mount) does require some use adaptation techniques, we use the pocket clip mounted 180 (other side) from the side located on-off switch position as a "locate by feel" reference point. Memorizing the button click pattern to get to all the modes (brightness and strobe) takes some deliberate thought, but is not difficult. Has a nice battery saving low moonlight setting (claimed 720 hours), and also a "memory" position.
Our Olight package included a 18650 battery, a belt holster, a 12volt auto USB power adapter, and two bonus night light LED light sticks.
Lets start with the cons.
The power button. Sometimes its hard to find in the dark. You have to feel the light and move it around to find the button. Also sometimes in the holster or pocket it turns on if you have it positioned just right.
Other than those, everything else is positive.
My favorite thing is the battery life. WOW so incredible. Then finally, when the battery is getting low the red light on the button illuminates to let you know i'll need to charge it.
I had another light from a different company that was a CR123. It got hot easily and then shut off in the dark leaving me literally in the dark, unless i used the light on my phone. The S30 takes it a long long time to generate enough heat to the point where it would shut off. Even if it turns on in your pocket, it won't drain your battery life or over heat unless you don't catch it for like an hour. Because of that its justifiable to have the extra width to accommodate the bigger diameter of the battery. The diameter of the body does not bother me in my pocket or in a holster. Honestly in the past year i haven't had to charge this very much. I mean maybe like every 3 or 4 months. I feel my use is medium/high. i don't feel i need to carry a charger or an extra battery with me while working like i did with my old light. If the red charge light comes on, i know i might need to lower the illumination to get though the day and then charge it when i get home. That being said i usually run it around 100 to 600. But having the 1000 lumens is great for when you need an extreme brightness.
I've never had a problem with it falling off the charger. The magnet is strong. I've even been able to magitize a needle and make a homemade compass. (a plus for EDC to have magnet, especially if your in the woods)
Moving though the modes is crazy simple. So much better than my last light where you had to twist to access different modes then hit the button to select. This one you simply hold the button until you reach the desired mode. Except for SOS and 1Lumen.
In conclusion there are more positives than negatives. I do prefer a tail cap button but i'd much rather have a rechargeable battery and cradle. This for that i guess. Yes i would recommend this light to people who need brightness, battery life and simplicity. What motivated me to do this review was looking at the specs of more pricey lights that are suppose to be top of the line. I just didn't like what i was reading compared to what i have already. Olight for the win!
Some reviewers complained of problems charging their light. When I had this problem I discovered the tail cap on the light had become very slightly loose. Tightening it solved the problem. Now I simply make sure the tail cap is tight whenever I charge the light. Some of the reviewers experiencing this problem didn't figure it out & returned their light. If you have this problem be sure to check the tightness of the tail cap before you give up on the light.
I wish the manufacturer would make a remote switch for this light. It would make a perfect weapons light. It is small & light enough to work on either a pistol or long arm.
