Detailed & Chilling Account of a Psychopath

I grew up on the East Coast and certainly was aware of the monster Ted Bundy. Now having lived in Seattle area for 17 years, I've frequented Lake Samammish State Park many times, vaguely knew of it as the site of one of his first killings. Recently, I became aware of Sullivan's book after listening to a True Crime Garage podcast where they mentioned this book. "The Bundy Murders" is certainly an exhaustive and well researched book about this sociopath. It will keep you up at night and leave you with plenty of goosebumps and checking to make sure your door is locked before dozing off to sleep.

Sullivan's research is meticulous, but it is his respect for the families of the victims, both living and dead, that makes this not a lurid and glorifying tale of the renowned serial killer, but rather a look into why this case so fascinates people and how he proved elusive despite tantalizing clues that should have led to his capture earlier. As these cases occurred before the advent of personal computers and easily searchable crime databases and advances in forensic science, it can be hard to imagine Bundy's spree lasting this long today given some of the pertinent clues like car and partial license plates. However, the most disturbing aspect of Bundy and probably what draws people to read about his case is that he was not outwardly your prototypical sociopath and serial killer. Endowed with good looks and charm, the natural inclination is to not see the evil lurking inside. As Sullivan shows, there is ample childhood experiences that may have contributed, along with congenital mental conditions, that created created the monster he became. Until his move to Utah and his descent into pure evil and madness truly took over, he was just the guy next door, not the weird loner or oddball lurking in the shadows so common in many other high profile serial killer cases.

Kudos to Sullivan for such deep research and handling such a deeply sensitive and disturbing subject in such a thorough and respectful way.

Good, but horrendous editing

This is a comprehensive account of Ted Bundy's murderous spree going from 1975 through 1979. Bundy is a difficult character to comprehend and there was nothing in his background (that we know of) that made him thus, therefore fitting the hypothesis of evil arising in and of itself without any surrounding, or deterministic, factors. This is not a book for those who crave gory details as the author doesn't explain the murders in detail, just their preparation and victim's background (one would guess that this is out of respect for the victims and their families, which is honorable); the gripes I have with the book are the editing (a lot of misspelled words), and the constant repetition of topical "lieux communs", such as "she just had a few hours more to live" and the like. Other than that, a good approximation to this dark character of American crime history that was Theodore Bundy.

It's a good read, even for those who haven't read about Bundy before. There are a few misspellings and the author has a flowery way of describing some things, but it's worth reading. I'm not sure why the author left out the fact Ted fathered a child with Carol Boone while incarcerated, or that her son stayed in Florida and saw Bundy shortly before his execution, while Bundys family didn't. There wasn't a lot of information about Bundys life after his convictions, his appeals, and not much about the execution. I feel this information should have been a part of a book called ' a comprehensive history' as it's all part of Bundys story. More pictures would have added to the book as well.

This is a thorough documentation of the crime of Ted Bundy and I would recommend it to anyone interested in the subject. The only gripe I had with the book is that Sullivan's writing is a bit amateur. It's crammed with cliched phrases in every chapter and there should be some legal limit to the number of time you can use the word "proverbial" in a book, much less one chapter. If I remember correctly, he blasts the reader with at least four "proverbial" cliches in the first chapter alone. Despite the lack of writing finesse, it's still one of the better Bundy books out there, somewhere just below Ann Rule's "Stranger Beside Me".

Comprehensive & informative

Probably one of the best tellings I’ve yet read of the life & crimes of the demented & sadistic sociopath, Ted Bundy. The author makes no attempt to humanise or romanticise the appalling acts of an utter cretin, as have some other authors. The shockingly brutal acts of Bundy are told chronologically, which serves to put in perspective, the horrific magnitude of what it must take to destroy the lives of anywhere between 36 & 100+ women and girls.

On the downside, from the point of view of readability, the repeated use of the phrase “and he knew it”, throughout the book, comes across as annoying and pretentious.

Good Supplement to Other Bundy Material

Sullivan has written a very good supplemental text to other material available regarding the life and crimes of Ted Bundy. He doesn't get caught up in the personality of the killer, forgetting the horror of the crimes. Some who have attempted to delve into the riddle of Bundy are too star struck by his wit and charm and forget the victims who paid with their lives for doing what they thought was a good deed. These women were beaten, raped, strangled or stabbed for his momentary pleasure. They should not be forgotten. That said, it's still important to try to find out, as much as possible, why they died. What happened in the mind of the monster to make him do the things he did. We will never know all of it, but maybe we can learn some of it. If even one life is spared it is worth looking into the mind of a killer to find out more.

This book has some good information on Ted Bundy. I am an avid true crime reader and was able to learn a few new things from this book. I could only give it 4 stars though due to all the spelling and grammar mistakes, it drove me crazy to read it at times. Other than that it is a good book.
