My students (2-3 year olds) LOVE LOVE LOVE this book. My co-teacher and I read this with a lot of character but we do that for every book, and this just happens to be one that they can’t get enough of reading. We read it nearly everyday transitioning to nap time. As they are going to bed they’ll say “good night, good night, sleep tight” it’s so cute! Planning to get copies for parents to read at home.
For those that think that the book sends the wrong message to children, I’d like to say as a teacher, it’s all about the message YOU send them. It is not practical to read any book to a child as is and not provide them context. You give children pre-reading and comprehension skills by talking about what’s going on in the story, why it’s important, and how it relates to their life. For example, in my class while reading the story I’ll stop and say “Oh, yesterday M was like the bunnies and didn’t want to stay in her bed. Then when nap was over she didn’t want to wake up and was very cranky! Do you think the bunnies are going to be cranky in the morning? Should they go to bed like mommy and daddy said?” Reading to children is more than the words on the page. Have conversations with them, they understand more than you think.
