MS. Barr owes her devoted readers an apology. Some here say it's near pornography. At least towards the end it just got worse and worse and she dug herself deeper into the muck that's for sure. Also it was to predictable with the split story line easy to guess where it was going early on before she merged them from the moment Claire was introduced you knew she was the Jordan Punk.....what's with that as suspense.
I can't recommend anyone read this one. Worse in the future the trust in this series is broken and no longer can we buy the pre-release from Amazon.
Where was her Editors & Publishers? Didn't anyone tell her it was over the top!!!!! PS I didn't like it from the get go and hate split stories but hung in there as she's done that before and thought it might get better eventually. It was almost impossible to read to the end on so many different levels and I suppose I was hoping that at the end she'd tie up a few things to at least make one feel there was something in it....but no she sort of dropped the ball and didn't even give us that. Come on MS Barr....in today's world of bizarre graft even in the police world and FBI we know this would never have been swept under the rug....I mean a police chief died and abused children landed in the system......give us a reality check to some extent on that one. I'd even not be so upset if Blackie was left hanging in the wind.....if some decent wrap up followed through. On second thought 2 stars is one too many!
This is extremely disappointing considering that Nevada Barr was always a favorite author. I have all her books, most of them autographed when she lived in Clinton, MS.
Unfortunately, I won't be buying any more; over time they have become too dark and unpleasant. Maybe she can get a fresh mindset by re-reading her earlier novels to see how she used to write. They were spellbinding without casting an evil spell.
The hellish depravity so graphically described in this novel may have satisfied some personal need for Barr, but it did nothing but create a 'sick' feeling for this reader.
The best writers always tie up all loose ends in mysteries or thrillers. There were two big flaws in Burn; Barr wasn't up to par this time.
Burn is so sad for many reasons.
