The city of"Merina", is a ripe plum for the picking, and Emperor Balthezar, fresh front other such victories, has decided to pick it for himself. His chancellor, General, and mage, are all more than ready to assist him, each for their own reasons.
A greedy, but otherwise fairly benign man, the chancellor sees a chance to appropriate great riches for himself. A man known for his cruelty, and perversions, the general sees any number of opportunities to practice his atrocities.
It is the third man in the Emperors service who is the most dangerous threat; a man who has given himself over to the dark, and has no conscience or mercy. His plans for the three women of the Tiger, who rule Mirida, are as evil as they come.
There is one gallant, honorable man, who may be able to help them defeat their enimies, but, will he; and will they find each other before it's too late?

As faithful readers of my reviews, including all my book reviews, here on Facebook, Amazon, and other places may recall, I am a HUGE fan of Andre Norton's books. Yet, this one the one novel that she wrote with Marion Zimmer Bradley and Mercedes Lackey that I didn't read when it first came out in hardcover back in 1995 around my birthday - though I do have a copy Andre signed that I acquired through eBay years ago.
I honestly don't know why I put off reading this fantasy novel that Andre co-wrote. I enjoyed reading Mercedes Lackey's Heralds Series and I did like some of Marion Zimmer Bradley's works, including her Darkover novels. It may have been that during the fantasy novel resurgence of the 1990s, shared world novels written by numerous writers were extremely popular and call me silly, but sometimes "popular things" can be off putting to me. And of course, anything Andre wrote I read with great anticipation because I loved her writing.
For example, when I was in high school, "Lord of the Rings" was extremely popular, but I didn't read it until it's popularity passed. Yet, I did read all the Harry Potter novels when they came out - as Jeff H. likes to point out. [Note: While he's seen all eight Harry Potter movies, Jeff H. hasn't read any of the Harry Potter novels. Jeff prefers non-fiction to reading fiction, and don't please ask how someone who rarely reads fiction could be one of my best friends since Rick rarely reads fiction either. At least Zack reads non-fiction and fiction like me. Say Zack, about that book on Judaism you borrowed three years ago...]
"Tiger Burning Bright" is an enjoyable fantasy novel - yet not a great fantasy novel, Set in the country of Merina, that worships the Goddess and is ruled by the women of "The House of the Tiger."
In a quest to gain more lands and the great power of the Goddess' Heart that resides in HER temple; Emperor Balthasar and his armies led by the foul and dark necromancer Apolon are at Merina's gates.
In a bold and daring move, Queen Lydana, her daughter Princess Shelyra, and the Dowager Queen Adele give rule of Merina over to Leopold - Emperor Balthasar's son who has grown weary of his father's violent ways.
What follows is a cat-and-mouse game as Adele, Lydana, and Shelyra each go underground and their separate ways in order to fight against the invading forces.
Strongly Recommended for Andre Norton Fans since it takes place in a world far different than Witch World and her other fictional worlds.
Recommended for fantasy readers looking for an intriguing world to visit.
Four Stars mainly because of Andre Norton.
