Then later on, they are running away, and he sits down next to a river, and there are a bunch people sitting at a table (people who have never been introduced in the book). and someone is coming through a door and there's a swordfight.
The second turned out to be a dream. Was the first a dream within a dream? Either way, there are graphical signals publishers use to tell a reader that a major scene change is coming, rather than just running one paragraph into the next.
