I had the pleasure of reading Lisicky's, "The Burning House," this week and can't wait to read it again. As I wanted to dawdle on every beautiful sentence but was lured into the story and followed it rather than linger on the elegance of language and poetic timing. On a second reading, I can savor the nuances.

The narrator's voice still echoes in my mind. He notices the intricacies of life while neglecting to organize himself. Lisicky's characters are beautifully struggling with the ordinariness of life. They love accidentally and with purpose as they construct community and family and struggle to connect, disconnect and align feeling and mind. Lyrical and grounded. Wise and ambiguous. Time leaps forward not by minutes but events in this beautiful tale.

I recommend this book highly and am grateful for the hours I spent engaged within the (digital) pages.

The Burning House grabbed me by the shoulders and dug its nails into my flesh. The novel makes unexpected turns, although internally, as the protagonist, a truly flawed character, deals with guilt and issues regarding freedom and middle class morality. And yet I wanted the protagonist to come to terms with his flaws by the end, which he didn't, and I guess that made the story somewhat realistic, even though I wanted more. Lisicky, a graduate of the Iowa Writer's Workshop, certainly has an innate, even intuitive gift with language, which is not a guarantee when it comes to that kind of pedigree, but it's enhanced by his techniques and methods that are well developed to the point of being advanced. If a less talented writer wrote this novel it would resemble an afternoon Soap Opera. Instead, Lisicky is able to transform the mundane dramas of a re-developing suburb into the surreal and meaningful. This book is worthy of a read.
