This book allows the reader to see the brutal reality of war as seen by a teenaged boy in the Navy following the attack on Pearl Harbor. His story told many years later to his great-grandson, who has his own struggles as a modern day teenager. I love how the cantankerous old man finds a new purpose as he retells the events from his battle at sea. Also, how it gives the grandson a different perspective that helps him handle his own battles. This is an excellent book for teen boys!

A poignant story that is sure to pull you in!

The Burning Sea of Iron Bottom Bay tells the story of a young 'modern' lad named Kyle who is highly annoyed that his very aged great grandfather, a WWII Navy Combat Veteran, comes to live at their small apartment in McHenry, IL.

The tired and crusty grandpa Ernie hasn't much left in him anymore when a conversation sparks a multi-day journey down memory lane. At first, only mildly inquisitive, Kyle and his BFF Dylan fairly quickly become enthralled at Ernie's Wartime remembrances. Of particular interest is the retelling of his harrowing times aboard ship in the extended battle for Guadalcanal.

This is a wholesome tale of youth getting taught a lesson, without them knowing it. At first, there is zero bonds between great-grandson and great-grandfather. As the story unfolds, you can feel the youthful callousness give way to genuine love and affection towards great-granddad Ernie.

It's not too hard to fathom that countless of today's youths would benefit enormously from a similar encounter with an aged family member or neighbor. The powerful lessons would be transformative, as they clearly are in this wonderful story.

The author, Rich Rostron, does an excellent job of wordsmithing these two souls into a wonderfully likable and caring characters. The progression of Kyle's relationship and respect for his great-grandad is especially touching.

I would not hesitate to recommend "The Buring Sea of Iron Bottom Bay" to fiction lovers everywhere.

A wonderful story of a major historical battle that is easy to understand

I really enjoyed this book and how it honors the fallen from our military. It’s important that young people should understand our history, and what men have gone through for our nation. I hope the author continues writing more. It’s a very easy read and I learned a lot. I especially like the story about the Sullivan brothers and how all five died on the Juneau, and how that incident changed the laws on brothers serving.

I had an advance copy of this novel. Roston has woven a wonderful story - a broken family, a school bully, but most of all, a grandfather who leads his grandson to the facts of a World War II battle with all its pain and glory. A grandfather who gives the boy the gift of courage and perseverance. I hope to see more from the author.
