I'm new to the system and have been playing it now for about 4 weeks. I have to say when it comes to independent games I have low expectations when it comes to style. This book is the size of a novel; it is hardback and for the most part (95%) has very fitting illustrations and nice border designs. It is well organized and detailed when it needs to be by providing examples for all game concepts. All that being said it costs about half the price I would expect for the quality of content. The system itself has a lot of concepts that I can see in other rpg's: a little of the Song of Ice and Fire RPG, some Strands of Fate, Riddle of Steel(Jacob Norwood is credited and writes the forward!). Those are just a few but it has a lot for most gamers in my opinion, requires actual role playing, not number crunching, and balances players well.

The tome is quite hefty, but still single hand usable. The binding was solid, and the pages are thicker than bible pages. The font was large enough to read at a comfortable distance as well. The cover was solid as well, and quite nice. Good addition to any bookshelf.

When I got it, this RPG system showed a lot of promise. It's similar to another system I've used before, so it was fairly easy for me to understand how this one would work. However, the rules apparently required so much explanation that important parts were left out: the magic system in this book is bare-bones, with only a few sample spells. Monsters and campaign construction are almost non-existent here, too. I found that there were three other books needed: Monster Burner, Magic Burner and Adventure Burner. All three of those titles are out of print, with available copies extremely expensive. I contacted the company that makes this game, and they explained there are no plans for a reprint or any republishing of those books. Could be there are some copyright issues tying up doing such, but I wasn't told anything more.

My recommendation is to not bother with Burning Wheel, unless you have plenty of spare cash to buy the extra books, or you happen to find them at MSRP or less at your FLGS. It's really a shame that a system this intriguing won't get the play it deserves.

index isn't what it should be

book layout should be better
system is confusing to someone who has never played. You may need someone to help guide you

Overall I find it an excellent system that reward successes AND failures.
