"Enlightenment Now: The Case for Reason, Science, Humanism, and Progress"
Is the world really falling apart? Is the ideal of progress obsolete? Cognitive scientist and public intellectual Steven Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines and prophecies of doom, and instead, follow the data: In seventy-five jaw-dropping graphs, Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise. Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Burnout is the fifth installment in the Pecan Bayou Mystery Series.  When I started out telling the story of Betsy Livingston, she was a single mom who wrote the local Happy Hinter column for the newspaper. Betsy was abandoned by her con man husband while she was pregnant with their child. Knocked off her feet temporarily she rallied back with the help of her father Lt. Judd Kelsey, Aunt Maggie and Cousin Danny. Betsy finds she has a great ability to think outside the box and solve every day problems with helpful hint strategies. This thinking also helps her pull together clues on the many murder investigations she becomes involved in. She also finds a handsome meteorologist who helps her keep plenty of sunny skies on her horizon.
Betsy is surrounded by the people of Pecan Bayou Texas who include an annoying reporter, a beautician who may have sucked up a little too much Final Net, the daughter of an old cowboy star and some four star establishments like Earl's Coffee, the town's very own version of Starbucks (don't wake Earl if he's napping-just get your own damn coffee and leave a buck on the counter) and Birdie's Diner where hamburgers and milkshakes are an art form.
I have really tried to create a place that frankly, if it weren't for the incredibly high amount of homicide cases, wouldn't mind living myself. In Burnout the local weatherman, Hurricane Hal, who appears daily on NUTV has come down with a case of the flu. Betsy's husband takes over for him and finds he's an instant celebrity meanwhile Betsy struggles with her own bout of stomach trouble. When a fire breaks out that looks like arson, Betsy is afraid she may have lost an old friend who has been missing since the blaze.
Thanks again, and if you want to read more about Betsy and Pecan Bayou read the first four cozy mysteries in the Pecan Bayou Mystery series.
