Written over a span of fifteen years, these poems begin and end in community, gatherings and groups where I was blessed and loved, supported and given every opportunity to deepen my faith and skills in expressing that faith through poetry, prayers, and preaching, and the writing workshops I lead for others to discover their own creativity through spiritual writing.

Although my poetry rises out of my experience with the Christian tradition, and many of the poems address faith and the Christian story directly, an equal number consider universal themes of life.

My life is overflowing with gifts. I pray that some of them will spill out in the world through Burnt Offerings.

Cathy Warner is a poet, writer, photographer, teacher, editor, and home renovator who lives on the shores of Washington’s Hood Canal. She's author of three books of poetry: Difficult Gifts (2023), Home By Another Road (2019), and Burnt Offerings (2014), and the editor of the poetry anthologies Poemographs for Peace (2022), Poemographs (2021) and Viral Verse: Poetry from the Pandemic (2020). Her fiction, short memoir, and essays have appeared in dozens of print journals and online venues including Under the Sun, The Other Journal, So To Speak, Water~Stone, and the blogs of Ruminate, Relief, and Image. She is represented in several anthologies, most recently Crone Rising (2021) and West of the Divide (2019). Recipient of the Steinbeck and SuRaa fiction awards, Cathy has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and Best American Essays. She holds an MFA in Creative Writing from Seattle Pacific University. This is a collection of poems that contemplate a variety of subjects: love, loss, God, family, the natural environment. Each poem stuns the reader with its beauty. The writing is exquisite and the insights touch the mind and heart. I read this book in the midst of winter with a fire in the fireplace, which seemed to suit it perfectly, but I can also imagine reading it on a hammock with the sun filtering through the leaves above.

If Anne LaMott was a poet, her name would be Cathy Warner. Cathy's poems are honest, vulnerable and real. She peels away her own skin like a surgeon and shows us her heart, at times battered and bruised, but ultimately and wonderfully healed and human. Her images take us on a journey into the intimate details of life without sentimentalism and reveals the transformative power of the present moment. The faith at the heart of every poem reveals a God who meets us wherever we are and receives us just as we are, flaws and all. "We All Sit by a Pool of Tears" is perhaps the best treatise on the atonement ever! This is a book that I will continue to read and contemplate for a very long time.

From cover to cover this collection is so exciting that I read it in a single sitting. Warner kindles a fire in the reader's soul through her rich, sometimes raw, and always authentic voice and takes it on an unpredictable spiritual journey--one filled with twists, challenges, delights, and surprising characters.
