This book is more psychological horror than ghosts, goblins or ghouls, so be aware of that before you purchase. It takes place on an almost "too good to be true" country estate. Acres and acres of land, a private beach, pool, everything summer tenants from New York City could want for only $900 all summer! But...there is ONE tiny catch.
It's well written and though I didn't connect with it, if you like horror, I think it's worth your time.
I didn't like Marian Rolf from the beginning. She comes across as the most selfish manipulating control freak bitch this side of creation and poor Ben is just suffering under her weight.
The Allardyce's plan this all from the very beginning. That's obvious from the first time Marian steps into the house and falls in love with it immediately. She is unknowingly under the first stage of possession (obsession) by Mrs. Allardyce. This is why Marian is desperate to return to the house against Ben's better judgment. The Allardyce's chose someone who is similar in personality and physicality to Mrs. Allardyce as they have done for years.
I suspect that the Allardyce's are a family of witches under the tutelage of the mother who yearned for eternal life. A pack was made with the Devil. In exchange for eternal life they must sacrifice "Burnt Offerings". The mother must have died and not even the Devil himself could restore her health so a body is needed for physical life.
I found the book's ending dull in comparison to the movie version which is much more shocking and effective. I wish the movie version would have shone Roz and Brother restored to their youth rather than just a voice over. It would have been more better to show the Allardyce's as they were in their hey day of the 19th century. One big happy demonic family.
