About the Author

Nitobe Inazo (September 1, 1862 October 15, 1933) was a Japanese agricultural economist, author, educator, diplomat, politician, and Christian during the pre-World War II period. Nitobe was born in Morioka, Mutsu Province (present-day Iwate Prefecture). His father was a retainer to the local daimyo of the Nambu clan. His infant name was Inanosuke. Nitobe left Morioka for Tokyo in 1871 to become the heir to his uncle, Ota Tokitoshi, and adopted the name Ota Inazo. He later reverted to Nitobe when his brothers died.

I got this books for a college class and found myself learning a lot more than I had expected. The read was smooth and I retained a lot of what I read. This book is a classic, and gives you a great perspective into Bushido as a historical driving force in Japan. It also allows for you to make your own conclusions on if Bushido is still present in Japan to this day and if Bushido's existence is still relevant to Japanese culture. It is not a very long book at all and you can knock it out in a very short while. Though it is short, you will have a better understanding of Japanese sociology as well as the reasons why Japan has formed the way it has. Overall, I felt this book offered a lot. This book has been around for a while, and I am glad that I got around to reading it. If you are interested in Japan at all, please take a look at this book and get a feel for the country, more than just the superficial and stereotypical "sushi" and "manga" perspectives. You'll take away a lot more than anyone else who just looks at current Japan ever will. Light, easy read with very insightful explanations of Japanese sociological workings and their reasons for existing. Recommend.

Rated it 4 stars because it is a difficult book to read with references to authors in languages other than English. It is also a good idea to keep a good dictionary nearby as this reads like a treatise with many words outside of my vocabulary. That being said, I plan on reading this a few times to give it full justice and get as much out of it as possible. This is the first time I have delved into the history of Japan.

Virtue is not discussed often enough. This book reverses the tide of modern banality by showing us the heart and soul of Japanese philosophy. If you’re studying Aristotle’s golden mean you NEED this book because it gives insight into virtues that will stretch and challenge the Western mind. Extremely well-written with a healthy respect for Christianity.

Obviously very old book. Theodore Roosevelt bought many copies for friends, THAT was one of the reasons I bought it. It does feel dated (again, obviously it is) however, much of the information has been lost due to time, cultural differences, and (worldwide) liberals and snowflakes. THIS type of "thinking" or "education" is sorely lacking in the modern world. Crap like "tolerance" has replaced VALUES, morals, family, and honor. I only gave it 3 stars because of the dated feel, that is probably unfair. Every time I was going to stop reading it, something would come up in the text to make me continue. I am a better person for reading it and hopefully I can melt a few more snowflakes along my path.

This is an excellent book to truly understand Japanese culture. I worked with a Japanese company for almost 20 years.

If you are working for a Japanese company or doing business with Japanese, read this book.... slowly.

Also remember that conversations in Japanese culture are thoughtful and slow compared to American culture

The book is filled with comparisons between Japanese culture and literature with the European and American counterparts--making things very clear to readers who are more familiar with history in the West. The way the author explains the art, philosophy, and religious ideas found in Japan at that time (and their influence is still quite noticeable in various ways today) makes the book very enjoyable and interesting. I highlighted many great quotes in this Kindle edition!

5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviewed in Japan on April 27, 2024
