Bushnell BackTrack D-Tour: Bear Grylls Edition
The Bear Grylls Edition BackTrack D-Tour is GPS made simple. Like Bear, you'll never get lost, no matter where you are. Using it is simple. To get back to where you started, you just push a button and follow an arrow. You can use the BackTrack D-TOUR to find your car in a parking lot, your campsite, your hiking trails, find your way back to your hotel in an unfamiliar city or tree stand at your favorite hunting property.
Simple, Intuitive, and Easy-to-use
Keep track of every journey with the Bear Grylls Edition BackTrack D-Tour Personal GPS Navigation Device. A precision digital compass with latitude and longitude allows you to quickly find your current location, as well as track any course by recording the time, temperature, altitude, trip length and speed so just like Bear, you’ll never get lost again. You can mark and store up to five locations on the GPS and up to 48 hours worth of data.
Perfect for Hiking, Biking, Running, Boating/Fishing, Hunting, and more
A great exercise tool, the D-Tour can help track your fitness by recording your time and distance, and overlaying your data on a Google map to help you meet your goals. The actual set-up wasn't that bad and the instructions are easy to follow. I had to read it a few times to get a better grasp but that's my preference. Younger folks won't have a problem with it.....older guys like me will wonder where to put the 5" floppy.
A note to older guys: Yelling at it won't make it better.
PROS: The size, weight and ease of use. Functions are exactly what I need so no excessive BS. AAA batteries are cheap and the coupon for better batteries was included. Construction looks to be good but I don't intend to go crazy with it. The Back Track app was easy to download and works great. If you're familiar with Google Maps, then you'll like this feature. The tracking is really accurate and showed the route I took going through me yard, into my car and a quick 3 mile drive around the neighborhood plus a turn around in someone's drive way. You simply can't out run thing.
I also got the Case Logic pouch as mentioned in the "frequently bought together" section. Great pouch and worth the $5.
CONS: The back light isn't the greatest and the ambient setting could be better. The rear cover "twist lock" for the battery compartment is an antiquated design and could fail. Also, the batteries need to be pressed in more than you think or the rear cover creeps up a bit. Battery door feels uneven. Opening it up again and reseating the batteries will fix it. The altimeter doesn't seem to be accurate and it if it's not I don't care. Compass & temp work great.
Coupon for batteries as noted above expired 9 months before I got it. Nice to have but useless.
As A personal gripe. I can't stand Bear Grylls' pretentious ego. Owning a product associated with him bothers me but since it's the best one out there, I had to get it.
All in all I like it a lot. This is my first personal back track type device and it's a great entry level unit. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to get a highly detailed look at their hikes and or every day travel.
UPDATE: I've used it many times and it's working great. I made a kydex holder for it which proves I'm as awesome as I've heard others tell me behind my back.
easy to use/navigate menus
can set dedicated waypoints- i.e. car, house etc
slim and light weight
very basic - tells you what direction to go to get back to the house, car etc
expensive for what it does
found mine to be inaccurate. Marked my car as a waypoint, navigated back to my car, while standing at the car, the GPS said my car was still about 40 yards away from me.
says it's waterresistant, but the usb cover seemed to easily flip open/up which would negate any resistance to water the unit would have.
I would have kept this if it was in the $25-$35 range instead of $75
