This passionate expertise manifesto is intended to elevate the impact of advisors who sell insight as entrepreneurs. Three foundational chapters form the basis of the entire book: experts develop insight by isolating patterns in data; they convert those insights to wealth by crafting a unique positioning for which few available substitutes exist; and their confidence grows as the marketplace embraces their application of expertise. The next fifteen chapters--building on that foundation--each answer a single question, starting with the role of expertise in a developed society, how important it is for experts to love the hard work required to hone their expertise, and how to see all that in the context of their own purpose in the world. We pause to dig deeper by examining the very narrow overlap between expertise and entrepreneurship: the narrow slice of humanity for which this book was written, with a nod to how easy it is for those entrepreneurial experts to be pulled off mission to explore new things. What are the critical positioning mistakes to avoid? Are there helpful ways to keep your deep, narrow expertise from blinding you to a broader, wider relevance? How might you frame your expertise in horizontal or vertical terms or a combination of both? There are core principles for this and they start with distinguishing between strategy and implementation. What are the earlier and then later tests to validate your positioning? What are the most effective ways to demonstrate your expertise, and conversely the activities most important to avoid? If you are an entrepreneurial expert selling advice for a living, you ll absorb deeper and deeper insight each time you scour it. It emerges from the trenches, and is written for experts in the trenches. Following the three foundational chapters (A, B, C) that open the book, there are fifteen chapters that build on that: The Role of Expertise in a Developed Society; The Interplay Between Expertise and Fulfillment; The Why for Your Entrepreneurial Expertise; Combining Expertise and Entrepreneurship; The Relevance and Sustainability of Expertise; Positioning Mistakes and Why We Make Them; Practicing Expertise Within a Broader Context; Distinguishing Between Vertical and Horizontal Expertise; Principles for the Less Exchangeable Positioning of Expertise; Distinguishing Expertise from Implementation; Five Early Tests for the Positioning of Your Expertise; Demonstrating Expertise; Not Demonstrating Expertise; How Expertise Unfolds: A Recap; and The Long Game: Maintaining Relevant Expertise. The book is fully illustrated in color, is a hardback (case bound), and has a full-color dust jacket.

Courage + Intelligence

...are unstoppable forces for experts

If you sell your thinking for a living, you'll get engrossed in this manifesto about monetizing your ability to notice patterns in your client work and then guide clients to greater success:

  • Pattern-matching is the foundation of intelligence and you're already good at it.
  • Effective pattern-matching comes from seeing similar situations with clients and comparing the results.
  • Courageous positioning is what puts you smack dab in the middle of those repeatable scenarios.

Here's how the chapters unfold:

Foundation Chapter A, B, + C

Experts develop insight by capturing the data from the patterns that they notice. They convert that insight to wealth and impact by building it on a positioning for which few available substitutes exist. And their confidence grows as the marketplace embraces their application of expertise.

Chapters 1-16

The book looks at the role of expertise in a developed society, the interplay between expertise and fulfilment, and the 'why' for your entrepreneurial expertise. After looking at how to combine expertise and entrepreneurship, we look at the relevance and sustainability of expertise in the long run, how to avoid positioning mistakes, and how to practice expertise in a broader context. From there, vertical vs. horizontal expertise is explained, as well as the core principles for making your expertise less interchangeable--particularly by distinguishing it from implementation. Then five pre-tests and four post-tests of positioning are explained, along with some tips for how to act and not act like an expert.

Dan Pink

Dan Pink, author of 'Drive' and 'To Sell is Human'

Genuine expertise has become more valuable then ever--and in this smart and timely book, David talks frankly about how to leverage your own expertise into a sustainable business. This book is essential reading for entrepreneurs in any field.

Kirkus Reviews

Baker (Managing (Right) for the First Time , 2010, etc.) targets an audience inhabiting the 'narrow overlap between entrepreneurship and expertise,' that is, individuals and firms providing insight and advice to others for pay.

He opens with three 'foundational' chapters that summarize how expertise flows from focus, how greater proficiency makes a consultant less interchangeable with others, and how precise positioning can achieve a 'price premium.'

Sixteen short but information-packed chapters follow, fleshing out these themes in detail. Baker explores many issues that confront advisers, from self-confidence and work fulfillment to managing client relationships and maintaining relevance over the long term. Each chapter advances his argument that proper positioning is the key to success. He draws relevant illustrations from his decades of experience and offers pointed questions and concrete metrics that readers can use to assess their situations. Throughout, he urges consultants to make 'courageous' decisions to narrow and deepen their knowledge rather than holding themselves out as capable of tackling any assignment. He emphasizes the power of saying 'no' and recommends keeping a 'getting to 'know' ' list of subject matter gaps to research and master.

Baker's writing reflects the approach he counsels. His tone is confident and authoritative yet tempered with self-deprecating humor. He projects an insouciant command of numerous topics without sounding like a know-it-all. His deep thinking on the subject manifests in clear, succinct prose and measured wit that make the reading easy and enjoyable ('Charge your batteries so that you can do the hard work...and put a hard hat on because some of this work is painful'). Chapters move briskly, and he is particularly nimble with transitions that orient the reader and enhance orderly flow.

Despite the book's focus on consulting agencies, other professionals who provide expertise or whose livelihoods rely on it--physicians, scientists, writers, etc.--should find relevant and useful ideas.

Since 'Quotations from Chairman Mao Tse-tung' appeared in 1964, numerous authors and designers have emulated its color and small format in hopes of becoming 'the little red book' in their categories. This compact, illustrated volume makes a strong bid to become the standard-bearer on selling expertise.

A must-read for entrepreneurial experts that also will have a broad appeal for other professionals.

Experts crush generalists all day long and yet some still advocate for building broad, diverse businesses that cannot possibly match an expert's depth. Baker dismantles that argument, showing why experts will always rule, while patiently mapping the steps to deeper expertise, greater impact, and higher profit. --Blair Enns, author of The Win Without Pitching Manifesto

I was referred to in the NY Times as "the expert's expert."

I was born in Michigan, but lived in San Miguel Acatan, Guatemala with a tribe of Mayan indians until I was eighteen years old, after which I moved to the United States. I spent six years in graduate school, earning an advanced degree in ancient languages and theology. I've taught at the undergraduate and graduate level.

I managed a publishing house and mail order book house from 1983-1988 and then owned and ran a marketing firm from 1988-1994.

Since 1994, I've been an author, speaker, and advisor, providing business insight to expert marketing firms worldwide. I have consulted with dozens of Fortune 500 companies and 1,000+ marketing firms.

I live in Nashville, TN with my wife Julie. We have two grown boys: Jonathan lives in Atlanta and Nathan lives in Nashville. Both are married and have children.

I taught motorcycle racing, love photography, enjoy aviation (I'm a helicopter and airplane pilot), and spend a lot of time in woodworking.

I speak to, write for, and consult with the expertise industry: marketing, advertising, PR, design, digital, software engineering, and consulting.

My work has been featured multiple times in the Wall Street Journal, Fast Company, Forbes, Inc. Magazine, USA Today, and two dozen others.

I am a frequent speaker at multiple TEDx events, Harvard, and dozens of conferences each year.

Leverage expertise to be a differentiator
Refreshing take on how to position an entrepreneurial firm. I’m not in a particularly creative field (Owner of a financial planning firm), but found the perspective on leveraging expertise to differentiate well worth the investment in the time it took to read. In fact, the book is in my suitcase now, and I plan to re-read it this week, as I contemplate the contents with a beer and a tequila. Recommended. UPDATE After re-reading on a recent getaway, I’m 80% complete on a brand, client delivery, and marketing refresh-focused on penetrating a much smaller niche more deeply, based on many of the concepts in the book. Looking forward to positive business and life impacts!

I read both this book and Baker’s recent book on elite advisors and their “tradecraft”. This book is more substantive. Not arcane or academic. A conversational tone. Lots of reflective observations based on his own learnings. Some chapters like chapter 8 on “vertical and horizontal positioning” are substantive and diagnostic. Very helpful. Other chapters are a call to reflect on your practice and your work (what is your value proposition) and, importantly, take your practice to the next level and play “the long game” in your advisory career. The connecting thread here is acting with intellectual courage, clear and crisp positioning, and continuous learning. Not a perfect book. Lacks case studies. No references to the larger business literature. His tone - at times to me - both humble and a bit arrogant. All in all, as I wind down in a long career as both a strategy consultant and a b-school professor, it helped me better name what gave coherence and distinction to my work.

I discovered David C Baker and Blair Enns a handful of years ago online and was immediately receptive to their knowledge. I decided to pick up both Blair's and Davids books through Audible so I could listen to them while I work. I'm a very tactile individual and like to own physical versions of some things, and decided to purchase both Blair's and David's books. The wealth of guidance and perspective that David shares is honestly worth 10 times the price of this book or more. I'd highly recommend listening to David if you're a creative professional looking to build an expert practice and solve real creative problems.

I can't in good conscience recommend buying the book at the moment sadly, as my first arrived with massive damage, basically a completely destroyed cover - Amazon replaced this and the second arrived with minor damage to the hardcover also... Hopefully you'll have better lick if you do order the physical book.

The Business of Expertise: How Entrepreneurial Experts Convert Insight to Impact + Wealth is the best business book I have ever read. As someone who always struggled to articulate what I excelled at due to the lack of a professional label or badge (e.g. engineer/lawyer/accountant), David's words of wisdom and practical tools provided such insight. I immediately as my new found confidence in my own expertise translated commercially and personally as I nailed my positioning and value to clients. The delight I have in owning that expertise now is immeasurable.

I can only sing the praises of this slim volume, which I often have tucked in my bag, and refer to regularly. It has become a talisman for my continued success, inspired me to write more and seek out experts such as David C.Baker and Blair Enns to continue to expand and evolve my own expertise.

I actually really enjoyed this book. I’ve been reading a collection of books about becoming a consultant and this one has been my favorite so far. His writing is enjoyable to read and offers great perspective and insights that were thought provoking to me. One of my new favorite authors who seems to have a ton of confidence yet doesn’t seem to take himself too seriously. 10-10

I read about 60 business and design books a year, and David's book is in my top 5. Here is why. It shifted the way I am thinking about my business and led me to immediately stop investing any more time in a bunch of business dead ends that looked at first like avenues. It is short and well structured, with useful summaries at the end of each chapter, motivational moments, concrete examples and illustrated concepts. The audio version is read by himself and is only 4 hours (I read both the paper and audio versions). An urgent read for anyone in the business of expertise!

I've been on a mission to translate my product design sole proprietorship into a formal consultancy that will create leverage. I've been consuming a lot of the different experts' opinions on this, from Jonathan Stark to Alan Weiss to Blair Enns, and now David C. Baker. David has rounded out my perspective on what it takes to become a well-positioned expert with this book. In fact, I was so convinced of what he had to say, and the way he said it, that I hired David to work with me on a one-on-one basis to ensure I get my consultancy positioning right from the get-go.

Read the book if you are in between a consultant and entrepreneur, there's nothing else out there like it.

I enjoyed the message but got lost in the lingo. For example, I’m not confident in how David distinguishes vertical from horizontal positioning. This book is not a foundational reference but it is great nudge towards building expertise.

I was struck by the depth and focus in this book. David C. Baker uses insights from his own reflections and from having interviewed thousands of business owners who have combined both technical specialisation with business acumen.

The chapter on confidence in business (and what to do if you don't have it) was life-changing, both for me, and for some of my business coaching clients who haven't even read the book!

Even the diagrams are utterly simple (on the whole) but extremely memorable and insightful.

This is a great book, I think especially for those who already have a deep expertise and have been trying to run a business for at least a year or two. It would definitely be helpful for people who are completely new to business, but I think its lessons will be far more easy to relate to for those who have been running their own business - with or without success.

5.0 out of 5 stars The book that checks all the boxes
Reviewed in Brazil on July 27, 2024
Recently, after years of struggle with so many things in my job, my life and my relationships, I've started to wonder if there was something wrong with me.
So I decided to go back to my old habit of reading books, understanding that there was something that I lacked, and that I needed a clear direction.

So when I started reading this book, I knew right away I was in for a trip. It started answering one of the biggest questions I've always had: How to recognise intelligence and differentiate an amateur from an expert? I've always thought that I was dumb and this made me superficial on everything, but cleared all the misconceptions and explained in a simple way, the most incredible thing is that, going through therapy and doing IQ tests with a specialist, I saw in real time what David taught in a very practical way.

It seemed as if the book was written in a specific order to teach, make me raise questions and answer them like a perfect jazz song, it was so impactful that I've read the first 2 chapters three times to make sure I've had the proper foundations to finish the book.

After this, through every chapter, I've discovered that all the desire to run a business in the weird terms I've created for myself wasn't so werid, I just wanted to be a expert entrepeneur but I had no idea.

Through the chapters, I've understood the business model, how to begin my entrepeneurial expertise endeavor and what exactly I needed to do to position.

The greatest value of the book lies in David's core expertise: Positioning; he explains in a simple way what a lot of experts can't with entire books and courses; he teaches exatcly how to narrow your focus in order to surface similar scenarios, find patterns, discover insights and develop your expertise.

If you are looking for another reason to buy this book, look no further, I'm already on my second run reading it and it feels like I'm gonna read this book for the rest of my life, just so I can keep it's concepts fresh in my head. Just buy it and you will see your entire mindset be changed.
