I have to admit: I did not have an extensive background with business models. But as an engineer turned IT consultant turned business consultant this topics was increasingly critical for me to understand. I scoured the landscape looking for an introductory text that would not eviscerate this complex topic, but that would introduce the topics in a thoughtful, and structured way. Unfortunately, the more I read, the more ad hoc the process of developing a business model seemed to be.

The "graphical novel" style of this book appealed to me when I saw it in a brick and mortar book store five years ago, and as I began to read, I uncovered, for the first time, a structure that could be used for every business model, across industries and technologies.. The book explores this structure, called 'The Canvas,' in great detail...providing examples of the nine different components. After describing the basic building blocks, the authors use the components to develop business model archetypes and discuss sophisticated strategies for common business models and business models that change over time--using famous brands to illustrate the points being made.

I have literally, without any context, shown this book to others, and they are able to understand the concepts after reading and reviewing the figures briefly; several times, I ended up given away my copy in an attempt to 'evangelize.' I also see the approach being used in this book becoming a standard for exchanging and discussing business models in many large consulting companies, which is a testament to it's breadth and applicability.

It begins simply, and creates a framework for understanding and understanding an important topic. It is easy to read, without being overly simple. As an introduction to an approach that is increasing becoming a standard, I could not recommend this book more highly.

"The chances of solving a problem improves when the problem is well defined and represented"...I made up this statement to summarize about the content of this book. Going into the details - Most business books emphasize on textual appreciation of authors experiences. However this book helps emphasize on Representation State Transfer of your mind on something that is presentable. I use the steps in Business Model Generation daily to understand every customer I consult. Having said that there is a saying that "Ideas are worth a penny and execution is premium". Unless the person who dreams on creating a new business dissects the essence into task lists and executes them most problems remain on paper. However the representation of any startup idea as a business model definitely helps whether the idea is worth pursuing or throwing or archiving. Also representing any enterprise that we aim to invest in or work for or prospecting for sales as a "BMG experience" definitely helps to improve our understanding of the core business.

Kindle Vs Paper Edition - I would suggest using a hard copy for more visual engagement. Kindle edition may not be good for consumption in my opinion as this is more illustrative. I tried to use electronic version on different computers. Except iMac 27 inch computer, all other devices fell short in showing illustrations correctly without cropping.

I read this book a few years back and then most recently I had the good fortune of attending a masterclass conducted by Alex. The power behind the business model canvas is its simplicity. It is perhaps one of the top 100 business books of all time. I would recommend the companion book on Value Proposition as well. The principle behind business model canvas is that it not only helps to understand your business but also your competition. It also helps you decide which area of the business you would want to differentiate. The key idea is to use this as a planning tool and test your assumptions in your proposed market before you build any real dollars in your product.

To a certain extent, the material in here has been covered for the last few decades.

For me it made think about the process a little differently and that is a VERY GOOD THING. It also opened up the idea that each product or product group does not have to have the same business model. There are some solid examples given of how to implement the Canvas idea. It doesn't matter if you do this the old fashioned way with paper and pen or with the online tools.

As business leaders we need to be open to ideas or new ways of looking at old ideas and go through the steps to see if a product or model will work. This is a good way to get there.

This is a good book to give you one way of thinking about business model generation. Has some good real life examples as well. However, this might not be what you are looking for if you have worked on creating business plans before or have gone through a formal business education and are looking for more. Recommended as a starting point but I didn't find it worth beyond that.

Business Model Generation came out about the time I completed a tedious, and essentially useless, business plan for a client. I started in on the BMG book then began to transform a business planning class I teach so that the class used the BMG approach instead of the workbook-style business model approach. The immediate results were 1) students (and clients, for that matter) understood their businesses from a more systemic point of view; 2) identification of customers and how to reach them transformed the tedium into useful work time for most. Coupled with Canvanizer (canvanizer.com), the BMG approach is amazingly visual, thorough, and within reach of most people.

This is my first 5-star review, but BMG definitely earned it.

The book breaks down specific techniques and ideas to validate business models you may think of to start. The authors cover a great deal of material that will be useful to someone starting a venture to the experience executive.

The business model template is perfect for market research meetings, I printed and copied it so many times that I decided to have it permanently printed on a magnetic board.

It helped me understand how businesses work in a much more visual and intuitive presentation. It was a light read even though my knowledge in the area is quite poor.
