Editorial Reviews

Review

"A Buss from Lafayette, by Dorothea Jensen, is a fun and fascinating read.  Jensen weaves threads of historical fact within this coming-of-age story that will resonate with young audiences on many levels.  Readers will love the tale of the highly relatable Clara and may even learn a thing or two about why Lafayette was so highly esteemed in America in the 1800s.  This book is recommended for home and school libraries and has earned the Literary Classics Seal of Approval."-Children's Literary Classics

"I fully believe that this is a book that most young teens, and not a few adults, will thoroughly enjoy. . .a full scale history lesson disguised as a can't put it down story." - I Read What You Write Blog

"The vivid descriptions of clothing, family relationships,period-specific customs, and daily routines create a charming picture of life in 1825. . .The characters retell stories of General Lafayette,General Washington, and others, providing readers with a thorough backdrop of history to accompany the book's main story line about Clara. . .an enjoyable introduction to the post-Revolutionary War period in America, and provides a lovely story about family, determination, and how perspective can change everything." - The Children's Book Review

"In Jensen's middle-grade novel, a young girl in New Hampshire meets the titular, illustrious French hero of the American Revolution during his commemorative trip through America. . . Her brief encounter with him will forever change how she views herself. . .A winning historical tale that may appeal to young fans of the musical Hamilton." -Kirkus Reviews

"Jensen effortlessly weaves history together with the daily trials of a girl resenting her stepmother's reminders to behave like a lady. Most school children know Lafayette's role in the Revolutionary War only superficially, and Jensen makes him come alive in a way they will remember. Historical accuracy, character development, and engaging dialogue enliven this narrative and make it an enjoyable read." -Booklife Prize in Fiction (One of top ten Middle Grade entries)

About the Author

Dorothea Jensen, born in Boston, Massachusetts, grew up in Chillicothe, Illinois. She majored in English literature at Carleton College and earned an MA in education at the University of New Mexico. She has been an ESL tutor for refugees, taught junior high and high school English, served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Brazil, and written grant proposals for arts organizations. In 1989, Harcourt Brace Jovanovich published Dorothea's novel for young readers about the American Revolution, The Riddle of Penncroft Farm. In addition to other honors, it was named an International Reading Association Teacher's Choices Selection and has been read in classrooms throughout the U.S. since its release. A Buss from Lafayette is set in the small New Hampshire town where Dorothea lives. Two things inspired her to write this story. First was her meeting a woman whose ancestor received a kiss (a buss) from Lafayette on his Farewell Tour of 1824-5. That buss, passed down through generations, was passed along to Dorothea. Second, she learned that Lafayette passed right by her house in 1825. This all sparked her interest in Lafayette's contributions to our struggle for independence. Dorothea also enjoys writing rhyming verse. She has written a series of award-winning illustrated modern Christmas stories in verse featuring the very high tech Santa s Izzy Elves.
