Noted neurologist and Chief Wellness Officer Dr. Romie Mushtaq reveals the hidden connection between insomnia, anxiety, and adult ADD/ADHD – and gives you a science-backed plan to heal burnout and your Busy Brain in just 8 weeks.
Do racing thoughts keep you from falling asleep at night? Is it impossible to focus, even on tasks that used to stimulate you? Are you mindlessly stress-eating throughout the day?
These are signs that you have a “Busy Brain,” a term coined by triple-board certified physician Dr. Romie Mushtaq to describe a brain riddled with anxiety, insomnia, and ADD/ADHD.
Dr. Romie’s interest in the co-existence of these symptoms began while she was practicing neurology. It deepened after she was rushed into life-saving surgery and finally forced to acknowledge the toll that chronic stress had taken on her life.
Determined to heal after conventional medicine failed her, Dr. Romie embarked on a mission to unearth the truth about stress responses in our bodies and brains. The Busy Brain Cure is the culmination of 20+ years of clinical research as a brain doctor and experience in corporate wellness as a Chief Wellness Officer.
The book offers a practical, science-based approach to healing your Busy Brain through a straightforward 8-week protocol that anyone can implement.
The Busy Brain Cure will show you how to:
- Improve focus and energy without coffee and stimulants
- Fall asleep and stay asleep
- Address the underlying cause of anxiety, insomnia, and adult ADD
- Manage bloating and stress-eating without a diet or cleanse
- Treat and heal chronic stress and burnout
- Alleviate the burnout crisis in your workplace
With her characteristic wit and sass, Dr. Romie sheds light on the science of chronic stress and neuroinflammation through personal anecdotes and humor. Written for high-performing individuals who need a lasting cure for their Busy Brain, this book is changing the conversation around wellness, success, and performance.

This book is perfect for anyone who wants a thorough understanding of how chronic stress impacts the brain and the ripple effects it has on our bodies and lives. Dr. Romie has written the book in a way that makes brain science easy to understand. I appreciate the huge amount of scientific research referenced in this book - it demonstrates how deeply the author understands her subject and adds credence to the solution she recommends. She also includes many personal anecdotes and stories from people who have benefited from her approach, which make the entire book very relatable and enjoyable.
Dr. Romie includes a full list of recommended bloodwork as a resource in this book - invaluable for anyone struggling to get a proper read on their thyroid or hormone levels. I've already purchased this book for family members and friends who are suffering from burnout or questioning their recent ADHD diagnosis. If you're wondering why you've suddenly developed ADHD as an adult, you must read this book!!!
Having a front row seat to Dr. Romie's extensive research was mind blowing and truly eye-opening. What I love most about "The Busy Brain Cure" is that it offers practical solutions without resorting to cliché advice like "just breathe" or "take a vacation."
I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who feels stressed out and is asking themselves "is there more to life than just work". Trust me, you won't be disappointed! What are you waiting for, get your copy today! :P

The author wrote this book like many speakers give talks: she informs you what she will tell you, then she tells her information, and finally she summarizes what she told you. So, the audience/reader receives the information three times. As a reader with a Busy Brain, I can understand how some people who can’t focus may need the information three times. However, I do better with more concise information presented once. From my viewpoint, I would rather read a shorter book that’s to the point.
The author provides a lot of her personal background, including multiple references to her outfits and Jimmy Choo heels. I would prefer that she just include her background in the introductory chapter. If she’s a medical doctor and Assistant Professor at a medical school, the reader knows that she’s knowledgeable.
The author provides many examples of habits that high achievers have, so every reader should feel that this book relates to them. When she finally gets to the actual steps of her brainSHIFT plan, there is nothing earth-shattering. Instead she provides a weekly list of achievable activities for the reader to take, and the next week adds additional activities to form healthier new habits. She makes multiple references to her brainSHIFT website, which provides additional information and resources.
I feel like Dr. Mushtaq understands her subject and conveys it very well, I just think that she can say it once and cut the book in half. Maybe she can release an alternate, concise on-the-go version in the future. I do recommend purchasing the book in paper form so that the reader can mark pages and quickly jump to highlighted passages. The e-ARC that I downloaded on release day was poorly formatted and doesn’t allow the reader to jump to different chapters.
I received an advance review copy (ARC) from NetGalley and Harlequin Trade Publishing for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
